The only way to become saved in my opinion is TRUELY accepting Jesus into your heart. Admitting you are a sinner and believing Jesus was the son of God and was sent to earth to cleanse us from our sins. It is a complete turn from sin. I also believe that once you are saved you are always saved. And last I believe Baptism is important to salvation, but I defentaley do not believe it saves you or you have to be baptized to go to heaven.

I was wondering your guys thoughts.

When Jesus told Nicodemus He must be born again - He was referring to baptism (read the whole chapter in context)

Jesus instructed the Apostles to baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
If it did not have salvific purpose - then what purpose does it have?

In the case of someone who never heard of Jesus, what then?I say Jesus Judges you,if you have the knowledge of truth and reject it,that is a bad situation.

If by accepting Him into your heart you mean having faith in Him and obeying Him, then I agree.

I agree.
It is a complete turn from sin.
Well, I think all of us resolve to sin no more, but we end up failing now and then. Good thing we can ask for God’s forgivenness and He will give it to us ,if we have a contrite heart of course (this happens through the Sacrament of Reconciliation us Catholic believe.)
I also believe that once you are saved you are always saved.
I would agree here and say that I understand that to mean once you go to heaven you won’t leave. That being said, I believe it depends on the state of your soul at death as Jesus tells us “He who endures to the end will be saved” (Matt. 24:13) Also, Paul warns, “See then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness; otherwise you too will be cut off” (Rom. 11:22).

Likewise, Paul writes “I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby justified. It is the Lord who judges me” (1 Cor. 4:4). He also worries about falling himself: I pummel my body and subdue it, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified" (1 Cor. 9:27).

If my soul is in a state of grace when I die, I will be saved. If it is in state of rebellion against God (mortal sin) then I will go to Hell. So until then, I will have faith in Jesus and firmly resolve to obey Him and I hope with confidence that I will persevere.

Hi Lisa, Someone who has never heard of Jesus will be judged according to the Law of God. God Bless

That would give you significantly different beliefs than most of the people on these forums.

I’m curious…what do you consider “a complete turn from sin”? Do you mean that you have completely turned away from sin and no longer committ sins?

If baptism does not have salvific properties, then why do you believe it is important for salvation? What is it’s importance?

I got that, but what is God’s law? Are we talking like the 10 Commandments or something else?

Let’s frame these as questions:
  1. (Protestant to Catholic): “Do you truly TRULY accept Jesus into your heart/or as your savior?” (since the heart is an organ that pumps blood). “Do you admit you are a sinner and believe that Jesus was the Son of God and was sent to earth to cleanse us from our sins?” “Do you turn from your sin?” (we would put it as “do you reject Satan? And all of his lies? And all of his empty promises?”) I personally do not know a Catholic who practiced their faith who would give anything but assent to what you asked.
  2. “Do you believe that once you’re saved your always saved?” No, it isn’t taught anywhere in the New Testament, by our Lord or His Apostles, nor was it believed by the ancient Church Fathers. In fact, as a doctrine goes, it didn’t show up until the 1500’s.
  3. “Do you believe Baptism is needed for salvation?” Yes, the Church has always taught that baptism was the NORMATIVE way in which our sins were washed away and we were incorporated into Christ. God is bound to show His Mercy, according to His promises, in this and in all His Sacraments, but He is not bound to show it only there, as in the case of the Good Thief, as in the case of catechumen’s who die before they can be baptised. The idea that baptism is not integral or that it is not one of two parts of the New Birth spoken of by Our Lord in the Gospel of John (the other part being the Holy Spirit) would again be foreign to the Apostles, the Church Fathers, and to Holy Mother Church. It’s also a notion that didn’t crop up until the Protestant schism.

What about when God tells us that even if someone has never heard of God or Jesus they should look around and that should be enough proof

Being baptised by the holy spirit, yes, but not by water

You said Jesus specifically in your opening statemen, now if you contend that the person can worship Jesus without specifically knowing His name I agree.God give everyone an oppertunity because He is JUST and LOVING.God Bless

For those who never heard of God, Who is

known only by revelation, St. Paul
says that just looking around at creation would lead
a person to understand that there is a Creator, and
therefore “they have no excuse.”

In addition, there is the natural law “written in men’s
hearts” which gives them to understand that some
things are just…wrong. Murder, stealing, adultery.

But I think we have to distinguish between a knowledge
of a Creator and the God of Israel, Who revealed
His existence to Abrahm. There is absolutely no way
that I can think of that an individual could know of
Jesus, except the good news be announced to him/her.

Why do you believe these things? Did you just pick up a bible one day and come to these conclusions on your own, with no contact with other Christians? Or have you picked up on the teachings of others? If so, what authority do those others give you that they are teaching the truth, and not just teaching a erroneous tradition of men?

Being baptised by the holy spirit, yes, but not by water
You aren’t reading the whole chapter!
Read the whole chapter and you will find the Holy Spirit AND water - which is exactly what baptism is.
