Before and after recieving Holy Eucharist

How can you prepare yourself to recieve the blessed Sacrament? Does anyone know any prayers or reflections/meditations for before or after recieving that might increase its meaning?

Confession, repeated acts of contrition, prayer of St Thomas Aquinas that can be found at www.ewtn.com or just google it.
 
What I do is after we say "Lord, I am not worthy to recieve you, only say the Word and I shall be healed, " I say an Act of Contrition. It prepares my heart to humbly recieve the Lord. Afterwards, I say the Anime Christi (Soul of Christ), and give thanks.

Simple, but heart-felt 🙂
 
Oh sweetest Jesus, body and blood most holy,
be the delight and pleasure of my soul,
my strength and salvation in all temptations,
my joy and peace in every trial;
be my light and guide in every word and deed,
and my final protection in death. Amen.

Do you have a Peita prayerbook? If not, you should get one. There are great prayers in there, like the Anima Christi.

Soul of Christ, sanctify me
Body of Christ, save me
Blood of Christ, inebriate me
Water from Christ’s side, wash me
Passion of Christ, strengthen me
O good Jesus, hear me
Within Thy wounds hide me
Suffer me not to be separated from Thee
From the malicious enemy defend me
In the hour of my death call me
And bid me come unto Thee
That I may praise Thee with Thy saints
and with Thy angels
Forever and ever
Amen

Just curious why you do this because it’s already done with the penitential right.
 
The prayers I say pre reception of Holy Communion are***“Jesus, when I receive you do not consider what I truly deserve but grant me your forgiveness. When I receive you fill me with every grace and blessing if it be your Holy will. When I receive you, let my heart burn with zeal for the faith.”***

I then tun to Mary and the saints and say "Mary, my mother immaculate, St Jospeh my father and Lord, my Guardian Angel intercede for me. Blessed Jacinta and Francisco Marto intercede for me. Sr Lucia dos Santos and Pope John Paul II intercede for me. All ye angels and saints intercede for me and obtain for me, through your most powerful intercession those dispositions which are necessary to receive my Lord a little less unworthily."

I finally say *"Jesus I wish to receive you with all the tender love and devotion with which your most holy mother received you and with the spirit and fervour of the Saints."

*I start these prayers kneeling on my pew and continue them through the line right up to the moment of reception.
 
After Communion, I always recite the Anime Christi that was mentioned prior, however I also add a prayer to St. Michael the Archangel which can be found near the end of the missalette or sometimes on the back cover. Very powerful prayer for me!

It’s listed as such in the old missals. However, both confession and communion are needed for a plenary indulgence if I remember correctly.

I forgot the prayers for the intentions of the Pope. Generally, the Pater Noster, Ave Maria, and the Gloria Patri suffice.
 
There are several prayers which I have mentally merged to make one which I pray before I receive Holy Communion:

“Jesus, you have given yourself to me, now let me give myself to you. I give you my body that it may be chaste and pure, I give you my soul that I may be free from sin. I give you every thought, word, and deed of my life so that the Heavenly Father looking down on me will say to me, as to you, ‘thou art my beloved Son, in whom am I well pleased.’”
 
There’s tonnes of devotions for communion in those traditional prayer books you can buy. I recommend buying one and going through it. I discovered the Seven Penitential Psalms in mine, which I now recite before confession.
