Before Mass Silence

Hello.

I’m sorry this is happening. We are supposed to be reverent in church. If people want to socialize they should go to the church hall or something.

When I used to go to the adoration chapel, people would chat right then and there. Then I’d start chatting. Then I’d be ashamed of myself. Then I got tired of the talking so I looked for articles about reverence. Eventually they posted a sign to respect others’ need for silence.

I’ve had to move across the church to be away from the talkers.

Are there any other parishes near you could join where reverence is more valued?

@Tis_Bearself you mentioned reciting rosary in church for indulgence, is that partial or plenary. I couldn’t find it in my book for indulgences. Can you further direct me please? Thank you.

What book are you using?
The current Manual of Indulgences should have a section on Recitation of the Marian Rosary, with wording like this:
A plenary indulgence is granted, if the Rosary is recited in a church or public oratory or in a
family group, a religious Community or pious Association; a partial indulgence is granted in
other circumstances.
“Now the Rosary is a certain formula of prayer, which is made up of fifteen decades of “Hail
Marys” with an “Our Father” before each decade, and in which the recitation of each decade is
accompanied by pious meditation on a particular mystery of our Redemption.” (Roman
Breviary) The name “Rosary,” however, is commonly used in reference to only a third part of
the fifteen decades.
The gaining of the plenary indulgence is regulated by the following norms:
  1. The recitation of a third part only of the Rosary suffices; but the five decades must be
    recited continuously.
  2. The vocal recitation must be accompanied by pious meditation on the mysteries.
  3. In public recitation the mysteries must be announced in the manner customary in the place;
for private recitation, however, it suffices if the vocal recitation is accompanied by meditation
    on the mysteries.
This is one of the four best-known ways of getting a daily plenary indulgence (the others are Scripture reading for at least 1/2 hour, Adoration for at least 1/2 hour, or Stations of the Cross at approved Stations)

I don’t know what you’re referring to. There are a whole bunch of “PDF books online”.

Do you have a link to what exactly you are using?

It’s is something I come across in most parishes round my way tbh. I usually just pray in my pew and kind of blank out what’s going on around me only noise I am still kinda tuned for is the bell ring at the beginning of mass, but I do like 15-20 silence to empty my head of the outside world before mass. I think for some it is a social thing to do have a wee chat before mass could be with older parishioners that they maybe don’t see many folks over the course of the week so feel inclined.
You make very good points here. It is possible to pray in your pew and blank out to sounds going on around, I also do this. And I agree some people like to have a little chat with others, so long as it isn’t too loud it is possible just to blank it out. We should try just to let it go and get into our own prayers.

You’re using an old manual that is out of date and no longer recognized by the Vatican. Although I don’t see a date on it, the fact that it has the number of days indulgence listed after the prayer shows that it is pre-1968 as the Church did away with that practice.

The Church no longer recognizes many of these old indulgences, and also has added a lot of new ones that are not in that book.

You need to use a post-1968 Enchiridion of Indulgences (also sometimes called Manual of Indulgences or Handbook of Indulgences). The most recent edition in English is this one
https://www.amazon.com/Manual-Indulgences-Conference-Catholic-Bishops/dp/1574554743

However, if you do not have money to purchase the latest book, you can use one of the older editions published on the web (there are several such pages) as long as it was published after 1968. In my experience, the older editions tend to have a few indulgences missing from them which were added later (such as the Divine Mercy indulgences) but most of the major indulgences for things such as saying the Rosary, doing Adoration, reading Scripture etc. will be represented.

Here are some that you can use and find most (not all) of the current indulgences in them:

Yes, the ones listed with “days” got transferred into partials. Thanks for links.

Oh, gotta love this Church. they don’t recognize their own indulgences if they are before a certain date…

Well, you know, dairy and meat products, etc… It’s best best just to be on the safe side.

Jesus still recognizes the prayers, so I still do the Pardon Crucifix prayer a few times a day even though that was one of the sacramentals they ditched.
It actually still probably qualifies for a partial under a section on saying “some pious invocation” regularly.

Last Saturday morning mass counted 7 people talking
not even whispering - blocked it out - for the most part -
But when people talk - they tend to brag - then crack one liners -
That’s what I’ve noticed.
I can understand a quick one minute greeting …,
but it’s like a coffee shop -
I actually thought of pigeons - on the cross - cooing away !

I am hypersensitive and annoyed by people talking before Mass in church. The pope said not to do it, last Nov 15th or so. My bishop has said not to talk before Mass. My pastor doesn’t care. Some priests encourage people to talk before Mass. On Sundays, the ushers seem to be having their own game going on back there.

One cure for this is to mot step into church until the Mass starts – just don’t go in there. It shouldn’t be that way, but it is.

I include they on my prayers. I like quiet b before mass but I can’t duct tape their mouths so I pray for them.

Yes, I was thinking this. In good weather, could you sit outside? If you drive there, could you wait in your car?
Maybe sit directly in front of them, and when they start talking, put in ear plugs. 🤣

As far as I can tell we don’t have a problem with “yappers” people who talk before mass if they do they talk quietly in the vesable or talk in the cry room as not to disturb anyone else who maybe praying or trying to concentrate on the mass or the Homely during the Mass,I actually like this and hope that doesn’t stop.

One of my greatest sufferings is a lack of silence before Mass while I pray and prepare to meet and become one with God. I then bear it and offer it up with Our Lord’s Passion. I also ask God to grant me the graces that are wasted due to those individuals’ lack of reverence. Look for the opportunity for intimacy with Our Lord in the worst circumstances. 🙂

Wait - you have people who get up to talk in the cry room during the homily?
