easier said than done of course

but I imagine Byzantine Eparchy of Phoenix (or Parma) would be more than willing to sponsor a mission so long as you could find a dozen people and a Latin priest willing to become biritual. Another option is finding a deacon just to lead vespers or matins until a priest can be found.

Couldnt the Latin bishop also establish a “Russian” mission too if in the unlikely chance the Byzantines or Ukrainians are unwilling to sponsor a mission?

i just though of this too, you could ask if you could advertise in the bulletins of the cathedral and local parishes asking if anyone would be interested in help establishing a byzantine mission

You need the cognizant bishop’s permission, people, a priest, a bit of gear and someplace to meet. In this day and age here is how I would go about doing it.

First with another 2-3 interested parties I would schedule a meeting with the cognizant bishop asking for permission to start doing some exploratory advertising for a possible new church. It shouldn’t be too difficult to receive that permission if you are serious and well-prepared for the meeting.

Next I would create a very professional website and Facebook page (yes, Facebook!) to use as tools to make contact with potential parishioners. As I was building the list of potential parishioners I would also inquire locally about a place to meet. Your Latin Rite chapel sounds like it would be a good start.

Then I would get a detailed list of the required liturgical implements, books and furnishings in order to celebrate the Divine Liturgy. Then I would acquire the needed materials – simple and/or used gear would be just fine. If you then could go back to the bishop and show that you have a roll of interested people, a place to meet and the liturgical gear, he might send you a priest to celebrate the DL, perhaps monthly and then weekly. As your mission grew then perhaps in time you would get your own priest and finally your own parish.

I have known Protestant fellowships that start in homes and move into cheap warehouses while they raise money and get everything worked out. Then they build their church building. Maybe you could also raise funds for a year while you are collecting names?

I will reiterate. A great website and Facebook Page are necessities from the very beginning.

… chapel sounds like it would be a good start.
Right. In Byzantine Heart’s case, there’s already a (Byzantine-style) chapel in the (Latin) cathedral. On the other hand, for many people trying to start a Byzantine parish/mission, a place to meet would be a major issue.

ByzantineHeart heart has at least one (I think there may be another family in the area that has posted on ByzCath before). One is a start. The chapel is a good thing to have. I am making my living room into a chapel, but it’s easier to have a place already made, and a cathedral is easier to find than some dude’s house. To begin, Reader’s services are always a good place to start. ByzantineHeart, see what kind of support you can get in that regard from the Latin Bishop. I know Bishop John (Parma) would support the endevour. If you would like advise on Reader’s services or the like, I can provide that (we celebrate a few at home 😉 ).

In Christ,
Adam

P.S. I commented already about the dozen-people part, but I was just thinking about that last part … Do you mean a Latin priest who was already thinking about becoming biritual, or do you mean asking a priest to become biritual?

Hi ByzantineHeart.

I had been forgetting about this thread. How is it going / what did you decide?
