I was wondering if anyone has ordered the beginning apologetics booklets offered in the CA shop and what your reviews were. I’m considering purchasing them.

Are they good specifically for a convert who is still learning all about the ins and outs of the Catholic faith?

God Bless,

Jessica

Yes Jessica, I bought them, and they are very good, although short.

Jessica, you might also enjoy listening to good Catholic talks on theology, philosophy, etc., from my free website: alabamacatholicresources.com 🙂

Most of them are .mp3 files, with a handful of videos sprinkled in for flavoring. 😉

There’s also a section of stories from people who converted from other denominations to Catholicism, including many ministers, etc.

Dr. Peter Kreeft is one of my favorites. He teaches philosophy at Boston College and is delightful in his presentations.

The men’s group at my parish has used this Beginning Apologetics book:

shop.catholic.com/product.php?productid=351&cat=10&page=1

…and we’re moving on to one of the others in the series. I think that they are very good. While somewhat basic, they provide sound teaching and address many of the various issues that repeatedly arise in apologetics, especially with respect to issues raised by those of the Protestant faiths. I would definitely recommend them.

Thank you everyone for the advice and reviews on the books in the CA shop.

This is a great series. We are using it in our Apologetics class. We have worked through about 3 of the books and are working on the third.

yes they are particularly helpful if your issues relate to the beliefs of your current denomination, and how they differ from Catholic teaching. Their purposes is answering objections to Catholic points of doctrine posed by other religions (for instance, pointing out the scriptural basis for these beliefs) or by non-believers (using reason to arrive at the truth).

For someone entirely new to the practice not simply the doctrine of the Church Catholicism for Dummies (the yellow not the orange idiot’s guide) is the best beginners book, IMO>

To the OP

I converted to Catholicism a few years ago. What I found really helpful are the podcasts found on Itunes. They are free. I posted a thread about one of them. All you have to do is go to Itunes, Podcasts, and search for the following. Click Subscribe. If you want their actual website just google.

Dr. James Dobbins Apologetics (AWESOME)
Dr. Peter Kreeft
EWTNs Deep in Scripture
Catholic Forum
Catholic Bible Boot Camp

Itunes is free to download too btw. Try them out. I listen to them on the way to and from work and while I’m cleaning around the house. 🙂

I’ve got a book list too as well if you like reading a lot

Well… I’ve been lurking for a bit… but finally had to add my 1st post (that I can remember anyway)! Dr. James Dobbins - - Inspiring, sincere and very very very enjoyable. I particularly enjoyed his earlier talks when he had a group of very fine folks that met for a bible study at their parish. I learned quite a bit from Jim and all of the folks there… I totally agree! Check this guy out!!!

Same with the others… and there are many more… Fr. Larry Richards - his description of confession and sin… incredible… Fr. Dave Dwyer - Busted Halo show… also very great… iPadre, another great podcast… a little different format… very enjoyable and informative as well. I could go on and on… well, guess I did.

Check 'em all out, folks! Cjt is on target!

God Bless!

Mike
