So, last night, I was studying with two of my friends, both devout Christians (one Catholic, the other non-denominational). We were chatting and hanging out, etc. We did actually study, though we did take breaks and joke around with each other. But then, the conversation took a very serious turn.

My Catholic friend had been noticing that I haven’t been myself lately. We’ve gotten very close in the last five months and confide in each other. We see each other all the time and are always having coffee, etc. Well, last night, he started pointing out a lot of things he noticed in me. He noticed insecurity, fear of vulnerability, etc. and was letting me know how worried he was about me. He was also concerned about my job (I just got work at a rape crisis center) and what kind of effect it would have on me. My other friend was also voicing concern as well and was reminding that God loves me immensely, that it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.

Well, then I lost it completely and finally, told huge secrets (ones that I never even told my best friend from elementary school, and I tell her everything). It was the hardest thing I ever had to do and I had completely forgot about them (because I tried to pretend the events in question never happened). I was crying and my Catholic friend pulled me into his arms and held me while I cried. It was the most cleansing thing I had ever experienced.

Everything in my life made so much more sense, all the issues and insecurities I dealt with throughout my adolescence, my fears, my inability to be open with others, etc. So many things I didn’t even realize. My friends were crying as well and told me that they were proud of me and that they felt honored to be the ones that I chose to confide in (they are both amazing people who’ve risen above so much and touch the hearts of all they encounter. They’ve also been there for me on numerous occasions and have proven nothing but loving, trustworthy and compassionate. In short, how could I not tell them, especially when they were so worried?)

I’m filled with so much gratitude towards God, for preserving me in tough situations (what my secrets were about), for placing good people in my life, for giving me the grace to humble myself, and for loving me unconditionally. I know that even though our world can be cruel, we were called to not be of this world and that we see the face of God through the love of others. I saw His face last night through my two beautiful friends.

Blessed and merciful is the Lord! When you spiritually fell, He made sure there was not one, but two to catch you. Praise His Holy Name! Amen! Alleluia!

Christ’s peace always be with you.
