In John 19, if Jesus is speaking to Mary Magdalene, it means he called her a man.
Ooops. Crucifixions are tough on a brother…
**Ralph, please see that there is only two words “son” and “his” in the three verses of John 19 that supports the disciple to be male. otherwise all words point to Mary Magd too. See below:
John 19:25-27
25Therefore the soldiers did these things. But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
26When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”
27Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into his **own household.
Could we read it as follows:
John 19:25-27
25Therefore the soldiers did these things. But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
26When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”
27Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into her own household.
The problem is that
1.the beloved disciple is not named here.
2. It is not mentioned that any one was present at the place of the cross. Only three ladies are mentioned. In verse 25, only three ldie sare mentioned.
3. In verse 26, Jesus says about his mother and the beloved disciple whom he referred a “son”. that will support that it ws male. It is very brief description because Jesus could be referring to himself too, as “mother, behold your son.”
The beloved disciple satnding nearby was mary magd, who was standing next to Mary the mother.
4. Jesus could say to his beloved disciple (Mary Magd) in the words 'behold your mother" if she was the mother-in-law. That was a real relation and not any supposed relation.
5. The question arises, could Mary Magd be a disciple too even if she was not the wife of Jesus. Could she be a disciple or not? That is an important issue.
6. If Mary Magd could be a disciple then she could very well be a beloved disciple too. It is upto the Catholics or Ben Masada to decide which is the case or which could be case amongst Jews.
