My girlfriend and I have been together for almost 7 months. I am a stronger catholic than she is. She has been straying away from the faith for some time and i have been praying persistently for her to have an open heart and return to the faith. However, I feel resposnisble for not being a good example myself. In the first few months of our relationship we were very physically intimate. We would talk about the future and a possible life together. In the recent months we both have been putting our physical intimacy aside, mainly because we are afraid of the fall. I am going to be transferring to the same university as she is, and the freedom there will be even greater and so will the temptation. Any advice on how to continue to keep this relationship clean.

First … I have to tell you how I had to laugh to myself when reading your post. When I first read it, I totally interpreted your “because we are afraid of the fall” to mean THE FALL … as in the fall from Grace. Then I quickly realized you meant the season. 🙂

Anyway … kudos to you and your girlfriend for choosing the wise path of chastity. I wish I had that conviction when I was your age. Even though you may have been more physical in the past than you have wanted to, committing to it now is wonderful! 👍

The best advice I can offer would be really to pray about it. Pray individually and as a couple. Pray that God will “lead you not into temptation.” If that temptation comes, He will strengthen you. Also, praying together as a couple will allow your relationship to grow stronger and bring you both closer to God. If you and your girlfriend are meant to be husband and wife, your marriage is more than a contract … it is a Covenant between you, her, and God. Praying together now will strengthen that.

Enjoy your college years … keep God close with you! 🙂

I too thought he meant falling into mortal sin and not the season until you mentioned it!

To the original poster, My advice to you, as the man God created you, take the lead and avoid near occasions of sin, avoid being together alone. Spend time together where there are people around. And when temptation comes, know it was permitted by God too see how faithful you are to Him and whether you put your desires or your girlfriend’s first in place of God. AND PRAY! Demons flee the moment you start praying because your attention is all in God.
