I am working toward becoming a clinical mental health counselor. I am supposed to abide by the ACA code of ethics and yet I am Catholic, through and through. I am supposed to be taking part in multicultural activities (such as festivals, religious ceremonies, etc) for my multicultural coursework. My concern is, if I were to try to get a better understanding of, say, the LGBTQA community, what would be appropriate or not to participate in? I would not, for instance, feel comfortable nor morally appropriate to take any part or attendance in a gay “wedding” or a Muslim religious ceremony. I do not feel comfortable in attending a gay pride festival, but it might be morally permissible. I am trying to gain some guidance on whether it is just my internal disposition that matters or my actual presence at certain functions may be objectively wrong. Any further guidance on this would be great!

Why would your counselling entail attending pride parades?

Also, a Muslim wedding ceremony is a different case from a pride parade. I would personally attend the former but avoid the latter.

In both cases, if you’re attending as an observer not as a participant I think you’d be fine.

What’s the A for in LGBTQA? It is a new one to me.

I think it is morally permissible to do any of these things as an observer, for the stated purpose. Much like a journalist or an anthropologist, you are just there to document.

Asexual. If there are two "A"s the second one is for Ally.

I think there is nothing wrong with attending either. Im not sure a pride parade would be the best way to experience the LGBTQ movement. I think that it is good to get some exposure to different cultures, religions, political views etc in order to be able to understand a little better where people are coming from. It would make you a better therapist. Even if you don’t believe it or accept it it is good to understand those people’s points of view so you can relate more with them and meet them where they are at.
