The poster himself is an average twenty year old who manages not to get drunk every Friday night. If his example up to now has not swayed their behavior, it isn’t necessary for him to continue hanging out with a group he is not having a good time with. Friendships ebe and flow. He doesn’t have to spend every weekend with the same group. Since he has other interests, he should take the time to pursue them. He may find a ‘Theology on Tap’ group that manages to have a weekend drink without getting plastered and while holding great discussions. He may just met other friends for a movie. Just because you’ve known a group of friends for awhile doesn’t mean you have to spend all your time with them, especially when they are doing something you don’t enjoy. Presumably these graduate students do something other than play video games and drink shots, and OP can join in that. However, when they are engaging in ‘loser’ behavior (which is what deliberately getting drunk is), he is justified in doing something else.

Get new friends.
