Hello,

I’m obese but I’m still discerning a religious vocation as a Benedictine or Carmelite brother. I don’t know though if I should be doing that while in my present condition. Has there ever been an instance where a monastery has accepted an obese novice into the cloister?

I’m not sure but have you talked to them. Don’t close any doors before you talk to them first as they could help you to knock off the weight.

God bless, thanks for thinking about monastic life

Hello brother, I am also obesed and I am discerning a vocation with the Jesuits. I am sure it will be a issue for discussion between yourself and the vocation director. My weight issue will become a topic when Jesuits get together to consider my application to enter the novitiate. I made some lifestyle changes and I hope I would be able to lose weight before I enter the novitiate.🙂 God bless and good luck with your discerning and I hope and pray for your success.

I agree with the other post…don’t close the door.

Your first few years are Formation, and of all the orders I have looked at, they help form the mind, body and soul. All of them had required physical exercise…even if some days it was just taking a walk. I would think that as long as they knew you were open to all formation, they would like to help.
