Being Catholic spoils everything!

In some respects. I get mad whenever I see anything pro abortion or adds promoting condoms and birth control. I also get mad when I see movies or any form of ‘entertainment’ bashing the church.
Violence in movies, if it doesn’t go over board, doesn’t really bother me. I’m not saying that I enjoy watching it though.
I get annoyed by the amount of cussing in movies nowadays. I don’t cuss much and I can honestly say that I’ve never said the four letter word or GD. Those are words that will never be uttered from my mouth.
I still listen to the same music I always have. Some of it is suggestive maybe, but no cussing.
 
I saw an episode of Inspector Linley the other day that made my blood boil - the fact that the 23 year old girl was a virgin was immediately assumed to be a sign of mental illness, and in the end it turned out that she had been abused by her father. :mad:

(Why couldn’t it have turned out that she was a perfectly normal girl who preferred sports, music, art, conversation, and reading to jumping in the sack with boys? 😦 )

Yeah, I know the feeling. I’ve had to drop out of some of my fandoms because the fangirls just get creepy. I also had to dump a guy.
I hate having to make the little everyday choices.
 
I realized the other day that I have gotten more alert in what I watch on TV, more selective. I try for something that has educational content. There are entirely too many trashy things on the tube to waste one’s time with.

However, the OP mentioned the Foodnetwork as being problematical. That’s one I wouldn’t have thought of as to avoid it.

Can’t even watch a lot of shows on used-to-think-it-was-harmless HGTV or the Food Network. Too many pro-homosexual, pro-shackin’ up shows. :confused:

Same here! It seems to me now though, maybe it’s just because I’m getting older too, but everything and society itself seems desensatized. I can’t tell you how many times I catch myself saying a Hail Mary to myself when I hear someone on Tv take the Lord’s Name in vain or people on Tv acting immoral.

If someone had told me though, 15 years ago that this is how I’d feel now, I would have thought they were crazy! 😃
 
Kinda worked the other way for me. I wasn’t like the other kids, and they could smell it like a dog smells fear. I wanted so badly to be like all the others, and like the things they liked. I tried so hard. The harder I tried, the more miserable I became. Finally, I let St. Faustina lead me meekly back to the awkwardness I could never escape. Our Holy Mother can be one controlling lady! 🤷

I was just watching something perfectly innocent on the Travel Channel today (a show about food factories) when one of the commercials showed two women kissing.

Yikes.
 
I love TV and will pretty much watch anything, but I watch for different reasons than most. I work as a editor, so I’m always interested in the way shows are edited together and since EWTN is horrible at that, I don’t think I’d get much from watching them.

However I am not fond of shows that bash the Church for no reason. Some of my DH and I favorite channels are: Discovery, History Channel, History Channel International, National Geographic Channel, BBC, TLC, Sundance, IFC, Food Network, and TCM

I watch american movies and sometimes I find them so annoying because really they’re these big budget productions with glizty special effects etc, with okay plots. Personally, I love documentaries and independant films, and while I wish there were more films with good moral messages, I don’t think that they have to be these overt Catholic films either.
 
The commenter mentions HGTV and is correct. Some of the shows do appear to feature homosexual couples an inordinate amount of the time, and my gaydar goes off immediately. I don’t know whether I am more bugged at that, or the young couples who want more rooms for the dogs they spoil like children – a pet peeve of mine, as it were!
 
I developed an aversion to TV and popular culture when I was a teenager, but it slowly crept into my life. Now the pendulum is swinging the other way, and I’m seriously thinking of dumping the TV once and for all.

My biggest Catholic “spoiling” came to my love life. I was divorced several years before I went through RCIA, but I continued to date and was even engaged to someone for awhile, all without an annulment. In the last couple of years, I have come to realize that I am indeed not free to date, so I gave that up. It hasn’t been much of a loss, really. As a lady over 50, the pickin’s are slim enough to begin with, but when men find out that you are trying to live a chaste, holy life, 99% of them run in the opposite direction anyway. :rolleyes:

You must have been listening to Doug Buffone and Ed O’Bradovich on 670 AM. 👍 They’re both over 60 and ex-Bears players, and they get pretty wound up and heated, even after the Bears win.

To keep this post on topic, ever since rejoining Catholicism, I’ve been increasingly troubled by the advertisers on that same radio station. Since it’s a 24-hour sports-talk format, I’m sure that well over 90% of its listeners are men, and the commercials reflect that accordingly: Beer, cars, sports betting, investment firms, baldness cures, ED pills. A number of Chicago-area strip clubs also advertise on the station, some of which I know for a fact turn a blind eye toward the 100% illegal prostitution that goes on right under their noses.

(I plead the 5th on exactly how I know this. Suffice it to say I did a lot I was not proud of in my 20s before coming back into the fold. Ahem. “Bless me father, for I have sinned. It has been 15 years since my last confession…”)

As I further study and appreciate the Church’s views on sexuality, I take an increasingly dim view toward the “adult entertainment” industry. Most of my friends tell me to lighten up, that I’m not as much fun as I used to be, but I’ve seen all too well how the demons of lust can destroy men’s lives. I’ve ducked out of the past 2 bachelor parties I’ve been to right before the “entertainment” showed up, even though I’m single.

Five years ago I never would have believed I would do that.
 
It kinda does. In some ways, at least. I have a romance novel that was written in the late 70s that I looooove. It’s beautiful writing and truly doesn’t belong in the romance section of any bookstore. But it has some sex scenes that, though not graphic, are still there. I have a few others by the same author, but this one I re-read every winter.

Since coming back to the Church, I’ve been too afraid to pick it up again for fear it would be a sin. :confused:

I’m pretty sure, after reading many of your posts, that you and I are spiritual twins, separated at re-birth!

I’m a chef and I watch Food Network. In the last year I’ve noticed a shift in the way they produce their cooking shows. Sometimes, between the dippy music, the camera angles and the cleavage, I feel like I’m watching a porn movie. Ever really listen to that background music? I’m telling you - it’s a porn soundtrack.

HGTV, TLC, Oxygen, Lifetime - they are all putrid. I’m tired of turning on “Flip This House” only to be introduced to “Glen and Steve - life partners”.

History Channel and Discovery are incapable of producing impartial programs. If all I knew of the Church was gleaned from these two channels, I would have never returned.

When I first returned to the Church 4 years ago, I was a devoted fan of “Rescue Me”. I watched it every Tuesday with my son and daughter-in-law. After a year of daily Mass attendance, listening to Catholic Radio, and reading, reading, reading, I found myself horrified by my formerly favorite TV programs. I remember praying to the Holy Spirit to allow me at least a few things to watch! Fortunately, He didn’t listen to me! My discernment abilities may be a little too sharp now and may need a bit of softening because there is really nothing left for me in the way of entertainment. A friend wanted to loan me a book of fiction and I realized I hadn’t read a novel in over four years! I’m too busy reading about theology, Church History, the demise of popular culture, etc. Gotta be careful I don’t turn into a curmudgeon in my old age!

I remember watching one of the Food Network’s directors boast about their ‘creative camera work.’ Uhhhmmm, your camera work is supposed to show us how to prep a dish, not make us squirm.

Gotta say, though, that I still love watching Dinner Impossible, and Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.
 
You know, as Catholics, we need to encourage each other to get away from these things. As much as I want to have compassion for people, I have to watch out for the snares of those who want to sell porn any way they can. At the gas station, can you guess which magazines are most prominently displayed? At the supermarket, there they are, gateway magazines to the really bad stuff. I’m standing in line and there’s Britney wearing a ??? gauze thing where her underwear is clearly visible. Porn is headed for your cell phone.

Wake up, my fellow Catholics. Porn, as I’m sure many of you know, is addictive. And the peole who make it count on that. And the people who make pills want to sell as much performance enhancing stuff as possible. And it’s not just about money. What goes through the hearts and minds of people who think it’s OK to sell images of prostitutes? Let’s stop with ‘porn stars,’ ‘exotic dancers,’ and ‘adult entertainment,’ it’s all about prostitution. Images of prostitutes for sale and those selling it want you to get addicted. Pray for them since they do not want what’s best for you. They need spiritual first-aid. And I say this humbly, knowing that I am not perfect and am tempted.

Keep reading and doing what our faith tells us to do. God forbid, as in Noah’s time, we should participate in our current culture.

I find that I do try to be more selective in my entertainment choices. One big example: Revenge of the Nerds. I loved that movie when I was in late high school/early college years. Now I wouldn’t touch it with a 10 foot pole. OK, I did take a look at the packaging of the new DVD Special Edition when I was in FYE a few weeks ago, but I put it right back on the shelf. 😉

On that note, I think I should warn y’all away from We Own The Night. I can’t remember the last time I heard so many f-bombs in a movie; I even had thoughts of leaving before it finished (would have been a first) but I was with a friend.

You are most definately not alone. What I find most ironic is that the FoodNetwork target audience in female. Why do they think we would want to watch Giada’s cleavage swinging around the linguini? Why does Nigella whisper seductively into the camera when she is talking about scrambled eggs? And how many flambouantly gay friends can Ina Garten possibly have???

I enjoy Guy Fieri as well as Bobby Flay because they are COOKS! I enjoy Iron Chef because they are COOKING! I don’t need dippy background music, “artsy” camera work, or loose body parts to liven up my cooking shows. Oh Lord, for the good old days of Julia Child!
