One of my co-workers’ last day is today. Our secretary came by to tell me they were going to lunch at noon. I told her to be sure and come get me b/c I wanted to go. Later I came by to let her know that I found another gal to cover the phones for us.
About 5 till I got up to use the restroom and had a sneaking suspicion that the quiet was a sign I’d missed the boat. Went into the main office and sure enough, they’d left without me.
I know what I shoulda done: I should have gone in at 10 till and let them know I was ready. I should have gone ahead and gone on my own, I was only 5 minutes behind. But I was just too embarrassed, I went ahead and ran my errands that I really needed to attend to.
I came back to the office at 1240 and let the gal here know I was back. She said the others called at 20 after to say they were waiting on me to order. Oh well, I said. Like I was gonna drive myself when they all drove together. How embarrassing! I know I’m dwelling here, but I remember 6 years ago when my co-workers forgot about me to go downstairs to the cafeteria for the Christmas luncheon our employer provides for us. I was too embarrassed to go down alone and look for them. Turns out, I actually had to walk by the cafeteria to get to my car. I had even dressed up and everything.
I know, I know, I’m my own worst enemy.
