No… if a person has same sex attraction, the Church teaches they are supposed to not act on these desires or consent to any sinful thoughts. If they do that, they would go to Confession like other Catholics. If they live chastely, that’s different. We’re all called to chastity but depending on our situation: for some it means celibacy (homosexual people, people who are single, etc: there are different reasons), for the married it means no adultery… since sex is supposed to be procreative, homosexuality is a sin, but if you act on it/consent to it. If a person is tempted but doesn’t consent, that’s different, - for any sin. Hope that helps. Excommunication is for other things, there’s a list.

can the church excommunicate you if you are gay?
No…it’s no different then a non married hetrosexual -you are called to live your life chastely. To be sure it’s a cross…but we all have them…just in different forms. Having SSA does not excommunicate you and is not a sin. As with other things…it’s what you do with it that makes it a sin-acting upon in.

Peace

Blong, be at peace. The church does not excommunicate gays or condemn them just for being gay. Here’s the relevant passages from the Catechism.
Chastity and homosexuality

2357 Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity,141 tradition has always declared that “homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered.”142 They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved. (2333)

2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God’s will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord’s Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.

2359 Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection. (2347)
In plain english:
  1. Homosexual acts are objectively sinful (remember, however, the criteria for mortal sin: grave matter, knowledge that it is grave matter, willful decision to carry out the act or willful and favorable entertainment of the thought)
  2. Homosexual inclinations are disordered (i.e. not aligned with God’s will)
  3. HOWEVER; even with points 1 and 2, homosexual tendencies and inclinations are not by themselves sinful, and homosexuals should not be discriminated against, “bashed” or punished for their tendencies. We are called to look upon homosexuals with love, as they are as much a beloved child of God as all others, even if we necessarily speak against the act.
  4. With that, homosexuals are called to a vocation of chastity.
Hope this helps! 🙂

can the church excommunicate you if you are gay?
No, the Church rarely excommunicates anyone. It is a corrective state, not a punaitve one.
More often than not people “excommunicate themselves” When you sin you cut yourself off from God and his Church. Any mortal sin will do.

I am curious by what you mean by the term “gay” If you mean you are attracted to the same sex but intend to never act upon it then then God and His Church welcomes you in with open loving salvific arms.
If you mean a person who lives an active gay lifestyle with a partner or multiple partners then there is no refuge in the Church. Such a person would be outside of the arms of love. Like any other unrepentant sinner.

What do you mean “being gay?” Do you mean committing sinful gay acts? In any case, the answer is no. Through prayer and the grace of Jesus you can overcome homosexual desires.

It is not sin for you to for you to be attracted to the same-sex as yourself. Just dismiss the thoughts immediately. It is sin the entertain (gay) thoughts, to act in homosexual behavior, and to support gay “marriage”, etc

Being attracted to someone of the same sex is not a sin. Anyone who commits a mortal sin excommunicates himself (ie he is not in communion with the Church). If if a priest knows that someone is living in unrepentant, public sin, he may refuse to allow him Communion in the parish. VP Joe Biden’s bishop and some other bishops have excommunicated from their dioceses because of his [VP Biden’s] public sin.

Being attracted by the same-sex is not sin (as long as you don’t act on it or entertain thoughts of it in your head). Living celibate is the answer. It is possible to live a celibate life. I hope to get married one day but, as of now, I am a single 25 year old man and must live a chaste and celibate life. 🙂

That is factually in correct, Biden has been excommunicated for supporting abortion.

correct, but mortal sins don’t inherently excommunicate.
There is personal excommunication which incurs on all who have mortally sinned. When we commit a mortal sin we cannot receive Communion until we have confessed it. The period of being in a state of mortal sin is excommunication on a personal level.

There is ecclesial excommunication which comes from the parish priest and/or the local bishop.

EXCOMMUNICATIONAn ecclesiastical censure by which one is more or less excluded from communion with the faithful. It is also called anathema, especially if it is inflicted with formal solemnities on persons notoriously obstinate to reconciliation. Some excommunicated persons are vitandi (to be avoided), others tolerati (tolerate). No one is vitandus unless that person has been publicly excommunicated by name by the Holy See, and it is expressly stated that the person is “to be avoided,” Anyone who lays violent hands on the Pope is automatically vitandus.
In general, the effects of excommunication affect the person’s right to receive the sacraments, or Christian burial, until the individual repents and is reconciled with the Church. In order for an excommunication to take effect, the person must have been objectively guilty of the crime charged. (Etym. Latin ex-, from + communicare, to communicate: excommunicatio, exclusion from a community.)

Sex outside of Marriage is a mortal sin.
This is a good point. Pretty much any and all sex outside the Marriage Covenant is considered sinful. I don’t think there are degrees except those made up by people that are simply intent on bashing people with SSA. What is the practical implication if we start purging anyone that has committed a sexual based sin (i.e. premarital sex, adultery, using birth control, etc.)? I would suggest that getting a good seat at mass would be easy.

As we are all sinners wouldn’t it be better if we cling together and in turn cling to the cross? Just saying.

But what if adulterers were pushing their lifestyle in society. What if they identified themselves as adulterers, went to adultering clubs, pushed for marriage of self identified adultery (polygamy) and had adultery pride parades?
You see, we all are sinners in the Church. We all sin and go to confession and intend to be more holy. But the problem arises when a group says “my sin is my identity.”
No matter the sin, we should be ashamed of it, repent of it, and refuse it.

What concerns me is the OPs post and a post on another thread where he identifies himself with the gay community.

If a person said “Being a murderer and being Catholic” Or" Being a thief and being Catholic" And then posted about if murderers and thieves were excommunicated. Or welcomed in the church. If that person went on to identify themselves by their sin and said I am active in the murderous lifestyle would we be so quick to assimilate them into the church.
We are all sinners. There are very active holy people in the church who murdered (like saint Paul) and I’m sure some current ones as well. There are unchaste adulterous people in the Church and in God’s love who repent of their sins.
The real point here is repentance and chastity.

They are related, but not interchangeable terms
.
Excommunicated?

Joe Biden received communion a few days ago at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in nyc, presided over by Cardinal Dolan.

Can you receive the Eucharist from a Cardinal after you’ve been excommunicated?

.
Latae sententiae

Not licitly, of course many priests are afraid of potential blowback from doing so ( a legitimate concern).

At least i am not the only one who thinks that was false

Not sure how to repent my “Lifestyle” nor do I want to. in my opinion it is not a sin

There are a number of similarities between mortal sin and excommunication, but there are differences.

being gay per se is not a sin, however all sex outside of marriage is sinful no matter how loving the relationship.

Well to make the debate short.
Do you intend to live out an active homosexual lifestyle with a partner/s?
If the answer is yes, then you cannot be a faithful Catholic.
Why do you define yourself by your sin?
Why do you define yourself by your sexuality?
I don’t.
I define myself and my “lifestyle” as Christian.
Everyone should.
I do have pitty for those who cannot see beyond their sexuality. (Strait or Gay)
You were made for so much more.
That is the biggest lie the homosexual promoters have given us. That we identify our entire being as a sexual perversion.
The Truth is that God loves and wishes salvation for each and every single person. It is up to us to follow His path…
