Mathew 5:14-16 vs Matthew 6:5-6
Matthew 5:14-16
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Matthew 6:5-6
5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Matthew 5 (refer below) seems to imply that one should display the good works/thoughts etc that one does/has, while Matthew 6 seems to imply the importance of being humble. I was reading the autobiography of St Therese of Lesuix and she seemed to believe that this sense of doing religious things in private should apply not only to prayer, but other aspects of life as well. However, later in the book she refers to Matthew 5 and states that one's acts should not be hidden in their heart alone. So now I'm constantly wondering whether I'm supposed to be humble and not tell people things (such as doing volunteering for school etc.), or if I'm supposed to try to tell them for the purpose of hoping to shine a light in a sense. Even with little things I wonder (for instance, I had done a paper in a theology class and I got some extremely nice feedback. Then I started wondering if I should show the feedback to my mom because my intention of showing it might simply be out of pride. At the same time, showing it would make her happy, and the paper is based on theology, so making her read everything could also be like shining a light in a sense).
