Being made redundant

Where I work we were told today that over 100 people were being made redundant and only a dozen would be retained.

This will happen in 45 days time.

I have a wife, young children and a mortgage. My wife is on a very low income.

It is going to be extremely difficult to find and start a new job within 45 days and I know I need spritual help.

Is there a Novena for such help?

I can’t believe I know this, but yes there is. There is a novena to St. Joseph the Workman that many people use during times of unemployment.

Dear Saint Joseph, you were yourself once faced with the responsibility of providing the necessities of life for Jesus and Mary. Look down with fatherly compassion upon me in my anxiety over my present inability to support my family. Please help me to find gainful employment very soon, so that this heavy burden of concern will be lifted from my heart and that I am soon able to provide for those whom God has entrusted to my care. Help us to guard against bitterness and discouragement, so that we may emerge from this trial spiritually enriched and with even greater blessings from God. Amen.

Do you folks in England have the equivalent of unemployment insurance through the government? If so, apply immediately if you are one of the ones being made redundant (what an awful word!). After you do that, start looking for a job ASAP. Take whatever temp work comes along even if it’s not ideal to make ends meet. Consider working outside your field doing anything you can do. Doing these things will help keep you solvent as well as keep you from getting depressed if finding meaningful employment should take time. My dh went through this situation for several years, so I know some of your fears/concerns. I will pray for you and ask St. Joseph to help you in your job search. Having come off of the Second major depression of 2008 here in the U.S. and major job loss and financial struggles, I have encouragement! God has a purpose and direction for your life, and apparently this test is part of it… God doesn’t overlook anything. God loves you and desires to keep you close to Him. God will protect and bless you. All of your trials in life will be part of bringing about your good… God will be present through this and at the end… Your job is to thank God for His Divine wisdom, protection, and blessings even through this difficult time (you probably already are, but this is just a confirmation then!). Be thankful in your petitions, and confident in His care for you, in every prayer, every day. Don’t let the fear of the unknown future derail you, because that is Satan prowling around seeking a way into your heart. Rebuke feelings of fear or anxiety about this, and know that God is walking this path ahead of you. Tired of the sugar sweet advice yet? Sorry to lay it on thick, but the mire of the negative is just so damaging, and God’s peace is free, liberal, and preferable!!! I will pray for you and your family until I hear otherwise. Seek support for your struggles everywhere, because you not only may receive an abundance of blessings, but you will most likely be a huge blessing to others who need them! God will provide…

In the worse case, be open to different kinds of jobs (white- or blue-collar).
In the worse case, think about relocating and probably selling your house.

Brainstorm and rehearse a bit with family and friends to get some ideas and smooth out the details (but don’t overpractice). Do some heavy googling and make yourself familiar with any company you’ll be applying to – before you write the letter or e-mail or attend the interview. Adapt your cover letter and even your résumé (by bringing out the most relevant things) specifically to that company’s needs. No pitch, just show them why you’re a good fit (and if you aren’t sure, then, I guess, show them you can adapt).

Also, once again, if you haven’t been to an interview in years, definitely don’t give up on the benefit of talking to some kind of counsellor or advisor who’s on current terms with the trends.

This is so true; a job interview is much like a date - you have to dress the part, bring all the right things with you, and talk about all the right things.

I don’t think most people look for a spouse. For those who do, I wonder if they look for a spouse as if they were searching for a job. Sounds weird and you can’t even compare the two. I mean, people don’t send out applications for a wife.

You can indeed show enormous interest in a company and try so hard to convince them to employ you. If you apply the same approach towards a woman, you would freak her out.
