My mother has a habit of bringing me into her conversations. For instance, she will say “Isn’t Sue’s dress beautiful?” or “Doesn’t Bob make the best chili!”. I really hate when she does this because usually I don’t agree and I end up saying “yes” so as not be rude.

So, how would you answer? 🤷 And also, how are we suppose to answer according to the church?

just smile
the Church teaching is just basic Christian charity

You could always answer in a round about way

Isn’t Sue’s dress beautiful - yet you really don’t care for the dress yourself - say “It certainly looks nice on her”

Isn’t Bob’s chili great - you didn’t like it - say “Everyone seems to be enjoying it”

This way, you are not agreeing or disagreeing and therefore not “lying”.

I did that once…then my mom said “Did you hear what I said?” Apparently she thought I didn’t hear her, lol!

At any rate, if I don’t respond and just smile, it will surely come off as me being rude. How about a scenario that is much more delicate. Suppose someone says “Look at Tina’s baby, isn’t she the cutest little girl you have ever seen?” Maybe you don’t find the baby particularly attractive. 🤷 I would feel very uncomfortable to just smile. Honestly, I would most likely say something like “She is cute!”

You’re good!👍 lol!

Unfortunately for me, I don’t think I would be able to come up with something clever on such short notice. 😛

Or just reply honestly.

“It is the most horrid dress I’ve seen. She has no taste in clothes or sense of fashion.”

“I hope I don’t get food poisoning from that slop. He can’t cook to save his life.”

Then you will be assured of never being put in those awkward social situations, because no one will invite you anymore!😃

Just be tactful.😉

You could say the truth about what you DO like. For instance, if you don’t find “sue’s dress” beautiful, you can comment on what you think is nice about it or if it compliments her skin color, etc. If your mom says “isn’t bob’s chili the best”? you could just say you like something that was in the chilli, , if there is anything that you likedlol

… Isn’t Sue’s dress beautiful…???

… Gee mom… perhaps you like it, but I don’t…

… Doesn’t Bob make the best chili…

… No mom, I don’t like it at all

My mother had a friend many years ago & this woman built a very big & expensive house.

Anyway, when the house was complete… mom & I were outside of the house looking at it… & my mom said…

… Isn’t Maria’s house beautiful

… No mom… it isn’t beautiful… The front has 4 types of materials used. There is brick… there is river rock, there is cedar shingles and finally mom, there is plastic siding.

Also mom… the house is 7000 square feet and it is one huge big box sitting on a 1/2 acre… there is 5 feet of space from her house to where her property ends… and there is no back yard… just a stone patio and then the property ends.

So… when you are asked a question, just tell the truth of how you feel.

I also understand that telling the truth at all matters can also hurt someone’s feelings.

I have to balance what comes out of my mouth… 😛

I think there is a difference with social niceties…when you pass a peer in the hall at work and they say in passing how are you, do you go into a litany of the complaints, “it was raining and my socks are wet and the damp flared up my allergies and I just had diarrhea from the **** that John brought in for food day” or do you just say “fine” and keep walking?

If you say Yes, and smile, you are agreeing with her opinion, so that she feels validated thus valued. It doesn’t necessarily mean you think the dress is beautiful.

If you don’t agree with the above, try a tactic from Miss Manners

Mother Doesn’t Sue’s dress look beautiful?

You And those earrings go with it so well or I just love the shoes or Her smile lights up the room

Best of luck

I’ll agree with those who said to find something that you DO like about a certain thing… as far as the cutest baby? I’m sorry, but most newborns, to me, are NOT the most beautiful to me. I’ve actually encountered a few ugly ones, including a few of my own. I’ll admit a few of my own newborns were downright ugly LOL! One came out looking like he’d been in a boxing fight, and another I called football head.

What I do when I encounter an ugly baby and someone says “Isn’t he/she the cutest?” is reply “Oh he’s/ she is soo sweet!” because really… ugly or not, babies are sweet and cuddly 😃

**Do you and your mom have anything in common that you CAN talk about ? Same music, T.V. shows, movies ? IMO, if not, maybe your mom is trying to wrack her brains trying to think of ANY topic just to get to talk to you !

Your mom wants to feel like she is part of your life, but you may not be that easy to talk to, so this is her (lame) way of trying to connect with you. Don’t take it like it’s a big eye rolling “chore”, she just wants to keep a connection to the kid she gave birth to.

Do you talk to your mom about your life? Do you include her with things going on with you? If not, I think that’s what’s probably going on, she is just bringing a topic (any topic) up just to get a discussion going, to connect with you for a few minutes.

What about when she makes a comment about “the beautiful” new dress. Couldn’t you say, " No, I didn’t like it that much. I thought the fit wasn’t that good on her." " What did you see that you liked about it mom ?," and really be interested and just talk to your mom.

I’m a mom with grown kids, and I try not to be “lame” about stuff, but there are times I miss how things were when my kids were little and they would come to me for every thing. A good mom loves her kids enough to teach them all she can, and them to let them go. Your mom knows what’s coming, and she is trying hard to find a way to connect with you while she can.

Don’t be too hard on her, some day she won’t be there anymore and you don’t want to look back and wish you had been kinder.**

then just add a noncommittal “mmmmhhhhmmm”.
don’t do what I do and say, “No Mom, and there are other people in the restaurant/mall/church who didn’t here you either, say it again but louder.”
Believe me everyone in a 10 block radius knows her opinion on everything because she is congenitally unable to refrain from comment on every minor thing she notices. However she is the only mom I have so I just smile. (I did not really say that, but I did think it. baaaad annie.)

my other trick is to respond to such questions about the dress/food/baby etc. is just to respond with an adjective
gorgeous!
delicious!
adorable!
I never said that dress/dish/baby merited those adjectives so I did not really lie\

for some people the echo response works best, shows you are listening and does not contradict or start an argument

I think you misunderstood my post. My mom and I have a very good relationship. We actually live down the street from my parents and we go over to visit every single day.

However, sometimes my mom will have company and, on occasion, will bring me into their conversation. She will put me on the spot by asking me, right in front of them, if I like their dress, shoes, etc. Normally, I lie and say yes…however, after reading some threads here on CAF, it appears that this would be considered a sin, even though I never felt like I was sinning. 🤷

I thnk it is a real stretch to call the conventions of social conversation “sinning” and unless I was your priest in confession I would not dare to make such an assertion, and I think people are out of bounds if they make such statements about the actions of other people (they are free to comment on their own if they want).

I think that she does not really want your opinion but that is simply her way to state her opinion about something. My suggestion is not to reply to her question but to mirror or paraphrase what she said. For example to the question “Isn’t Sue’s dress beautiful?” you can say “You really like her dress. I can see why you like it!”. With that comment you acknowledge her point and you do not state your opinion.

👍 You Maureen, are The Master of good answers!

Dailey: If you think along these lines and “practice” this way of thinking it becomes second nature. It even becomes a bit of a game with yourself to see what you can come up with! 🙂

How much would it cost to have you follow me around all day pulling my foot out of my mouth? 😛 Seriously, why can’t I think of such diplomatic things to say.?

I would tell her, " No Sues dress is not beautiful, It does not go with her hair, and those shoes are sooo out of fashion." “As for Bobs chile, it gives me gas…” thats just me I guess. LOL! If I disagree I let them know it and why. I am a conservative with some pretty liberal friends. and neither of us, takes anything lying down. Trust me, You, and your mothers disagreements are mild. 😃
