Being raised from the dead?

I just read a “resurrected” thread that was a couple years old. The op was asking about a priest that reportedly was raising people from the dead.
In Hebrews 9:27 Christ says that man is appointed to die once(not a quote). So is Christ taken at face value and these folks are charletons(whether priests or some other form of faith healer/miracle worker)? Is it hyperbole and miracle workers really exist doing god’s work? Is dying once symbolism or fact? Is it once and done or is rebirth or reincarnation a viable possibility? Thank you for any (name removed by moderator)ut.

Gifts of healing is one of the gifts of the Spirit; Paul mentions it in 1 Corinthians 12. I believe that those gifts continue on to this day. I believe that it is, therefore, possible for a person to raise someone back from the dead. However, in light of how many fraudsters out there, I would take it with a grain of salt. People like Benny Hinn or Peter Popoff are just pretenders.

Death is once and for all and, at least for Christians, rebirth and reincarnation are non-starters. You come out of death as **you – **albeit with a renewed body; not as someone else or as an animal.

However, we must remember that death, or the departure of the soul from human body, is not per se the same as heartbeat or breathing failing. Someone could well come back from those conditions, although they are routinely used to diagnose human death.

Not quite. The Hebrews author said this, not Christ. Furthermore, Jesus apparently didn’t know about this “rule” when he raised Lazarus. My point being, the context here is important. This chapter refers to our spiritual life and death more so than the physical. Also, cherry-picking the verse like that is precisely what we criticize Protestants for when they say Mary must not have been the Immaculate Conception since Romans 3:23 says “all have sinned”. It’s entirely possible that the writers use absolutes in places where there are still exceptions by the grace of God.

Thank you to each of you. You’ve given me some things to meditate on (like the difference between a spiritual and a physical death). I guess I did cherry pick a verse without realizing it. I’ll go back and read the whole chapter to get a more complete understanding (hopefully). I need to slow down some and be more attentive to what I’m reading. Also Thank you for pointing out that Christ didn’t say what I thought he did. This is what comes from not slowing down and being patient in my readings.

Well in the Baha’i Faith we feel that being raised from the dead has a symbolic meaning…

You’ll recall the expression by Jesus in Luke 9:60 “let the dead bury the dead”. Our belief is He was referring to those dead in the spirit… but physically living. Again as in Luke 23:46 when Jesus was on the cross He said He commended His spirit to the Father

“Father, into your hands I commend my spirit”:

and then He expired.

So we believe Jesus physically died on the cross but His Spirit… His teachings… were restored later in the lives of His disciples.
