Being Slain in the Spirit.

I have been involved in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal for many years and have seen thousands of people slain in the spirit (maybe 10-20% were either faking it or falling from emotions).
I have seen this happen to “traditional” Priests, who insisted it could never happen to them, they simply did not believe in it. I saw it happen to my 82 yr old Italian mother in law who knew nothing whatsoever about the Charismatic Renewal and had never seen this happen before, I have seen it happen to a group of Downs Syndrome folks and to children. I have had it happen a number of times to me.

I agree with Annunciata, it happened when Jesus was arrested and it happened to John in Revelations.
I also believe the same thing happened to Paul on the Road to Damascus.

Please remember, it has nothing to do with the person “resting in the Spirit” being Holy, it has everything to do with the Power of God and a move of the Holy Spirit.

You may scoff, but remember, folks have scoffed at the works of the Lord for 2000 years.

I saw that the one preacher was trying to “slay” this other kid…he tried twice…and the kid (14/15?) didn’t go down. He ended up hugging the kid.

I don’t have much issue with this when Protestants do it, but, I do feel that it is uncessesary for Catholics.

Preachers don’t “slay” anyone, the Power of the Holy Spirit does it. If the Holy Spirit moves as He wills, it is up to HIM to decide if it should happen with Catholics. It’s a GOD thing not a people thing. So it is His choice.

As a former Protestant Charismatic and Rhema Bible Training Center graduate ('82), I can remember that we used Revelation 1:17: “When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead.” I can’t remember the other verses or reasons but that was the main one.

IIRC, 1 Chronicles and 1 Kings both say that the priests could not stand to minister in the Temple:​

1Ki 8:11 So that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of the LORD.

2Ch 5:14 So that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of God. ##

I didn’t see any answer to your original question of Scriptural evidence of being slain in the Spirit.

Acts 2:1-15 (NAB) When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, “Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does each of us hear them in his own native language? People thinking the others that were filled with the Holy Spirit were drunk – falling down, woosey, giddy, etc.

I read a book once on Jim Jones. He was an ex-Assemblies of God minister who started a cult. The cult members ended up drinking poison lemonade and dying back in the 1970s. The author of the book was a cult ex-member who had tried to get others to leave the cult before the tragic end.

The ex-member author could see all the evil and deception that Jim Jones did. What the ex-member author could not understand was Jim Jones’s power to “slay in the Spirit”. The ex-member told of how they themselves experienced a “slain in the Spirit” when Jim Jones “laid hands” on them. The author could not understand how such an evil person could cause such a feeling.

I think the brain has the power to make people feel what they intensly feel they should be feeling. Kind of like the placebo effect in medicine. (The placebo effect is when people are healed with sugar pills that they believe to be real medicine)

I do believe that a “slain in the Spirit” effect could happen. I think that, in general, the Protestant Penticostals are feeling more effects through the placeebo effect, like the Jim Jones followers, or faking it than an actual myriad of Spiritual occurances.
