Being spiritual dead: are there signs?

With Pope Francis focusing and meditating in his Easter Vigil homily “Why do you seek the living among the dead?” it has me wondering.

What are the signs that one is spiritual dead?
 
In a sense, when we turn away from God in mortal sin, our soul “dies”.
But nothing is final until your physical body dies, and repentance is always an option.
Our salvation history is full of people who messed up badly and sinned terribly, but reconciled with God and died in His friendship and are now considered great saints.
