My 3rd grader is being taught about Latinx at his online public school. I really didn’t even exactly know what it meant until I looked it up. From what I have heard from the teacher the kids are going to be learning about President trump’s and President Obama’s Character traits in the near future. The teacher talked to the class about the debate. From what I heard I know which side of the political Isle the teacher is leaning on. Some of my son’s classmates expressed their opinions on what their parents felt about our President. Is it too early to express my feelings to the school principal or should I wait since it’s only been a few weeks since he started school?

I think it’s totally fair to discuss with the principal that you’re concerned about 3rd graders and partisan political lessons. If they were in high school, sure. But 3rd grade is way too young for this stuff, apart from basic civics.

I think you should speak to the principal now.
I see this as grossly inappropriate for primary school grades, especially the part about “character traits” of Presidents.

Discuss it now.

This teacher isn’t going to ease off, and if the election doesn’t go her way, who knows what insanity she’ll be unleashing behind your back.

Yeah, Latinx just means a Latino or Latina.

However, learning about Latinx culture does not involve getting into the character traits of Presidents, neither of whom is Latino.

Thank you for posting that, as I was confused about what people of Latin descent had to do with Presidential characteristics. The connection escapes me.

Latinx sound a bit like Womxn
Wow, that goes to show how out of step with the times I am… or how little TV and social media I consume.

Last I read, the term was womyn, a word conceived to eliminated every trace of the word “man.”

It was not good enough, of course, because it pays tribute to the Y chromosome, that microscopic messenger of masculinity. Hence womXn.

😒

Not too early. Let the principal know.

I had a fifth grade teacher who often made fun of President Nixon in his first term (well before Watergate). It was a distraction from the lessons and poor role modeling.

I think 3rd graders need to be sheltered from today’s toxic politics.

Thing is, “Latinx” is mostly used by non-Latin American/Spanish people. “Latino(a)” and “Hispanic” are more common, though mostly people prefer just to use their country of origin (Mexican American, etc).

I can remember a Presidential election when I was about 9 and we had lessons on who all the potential candidates were and the teacher would go around the room asking who each of us would vote for, if we could vote. That was an okay lesson for 9-year-olds but we didn’t sit around having discussions on whether Nixon was a liar or not. Also, even with all the riots and bombings and Vietnam controversy back then, elections weren’t nearly as contentious as they have been since Trump entered the picture here. Nowadays I’d be afraid if my kid expressed a political preference in school he could get beat up.

Pronoun lesson. Here are some other gender neutral neologism for him, her, so on…

Zhe
Zhim
Zher
Zhimself

I mentally pronounce it as “la tinks”.
But that might not be correct. 🤣

But that might not be correct. 🤣
Who decides which pronunciation is “correct” and which is “incorrect”? And whoever it is, who gave them the authority to make that decision?

I’d say whoever made up that ridiculous word gets to determine the pronunciation.
