So me and this group recreated the mass (long story), so everything wasn’t legitimate no consecrated host or real priest. So basically we mocked the mass. No bad intention. So now that I am returning to the catholic church, can I just say to my confessor “Forgive me for mocking the mass” and be completely absolved. I mean what kind of sin does this fall into? Of course beforehand I knew it felt kind of wrong but we wanted our own “interpretation” but we didnt do anything weird. Is it a mortal sin? We weren’t marginalization anyone or preaching to anyone or anything like that. We weren’t telling the people we are a real church or stuff like that. It was kind of among ourselves. We weren’t claiming to be a legit church.

Did you pretend to consecrate a host? Did you say the words of consecration over any sort of bread? Did you understand that this was wrong?

I see a pattern here. How many times are you going to do this? You gotta start questioning the morality of your friends, and just why you are participating. Then why are you continuing to ask a bunch of strangers how you should confess this injury to Jesus.

Tell your priest everything.

I pray for you

Is this a repeat of the last time or is this the same instance as the other thread you are writing about.

Just get to confession and confess it already. If the priest wants more details, be assured, he will ask you for them.

Get some new friends though if this is something they don’t see as wrong and if they plan to keep mocking the Eucharist in other ways. I don’t know how old you are, but this is not what people do with their friends.

In paragraph 1735 of the catechism of the Catholic Church, the first reason for an action not being “imputable” to a person is ignorance. A person would have diminished culpability or none at all due to ignorance (or other factors mentioned there).

If one is not validly ordained, one cannot “confect” the Eucharist in a pretend Mass. It is impossible.

I agree that simply stating what was done, in confession, would give the priest the opportunity to give counsel and absolution.

At worst, such pretending might be a form of idolatry which no one who is faith-filled would want to do. If this was a mistake, admit it, confess it, and move on.

I don’t know it for a fact, but I assume that seminarians about to be ordained practice the Mass in all its aspects, without fault. Practicing the Mass creates a form of physical memory to help the priest celebrate the Mass.

Why did you do this?

Just say, My friends and I recreated the Mass because we wanted to (intention). That intention could be: we were 10 and fooling around; we wanted to mock the Mass; we wanted to see what Mass was like from the priest’s point of view.

Depending on your intention, this may or may not be sinful. Lots of children do that because they are learning about the Mass and that’s what children do. If you and your friends were *trying * to mock the Mass, that would be sinful.

From the info you provided, I would say “I mocked the mass” would be a suitable thing to confess. Don’t forget to mention how many times (once, twice, several, etc).

It doesn’t sound like a serious sin. When they make movies that includes a Mass, they also imitate.

In fact it seems that in part imitation the Mass may have included a sense of love and appreciation of the Mass, perhaps unconsciously. My husband told me how when they were children they would play Mass, with one being the priest, etc. Since the host was not truly consecrated, I just don’t see the harm.

At the most it might be like telling religious jokes…sometimes joking is a way to relieve the tension from something that is very serious and a bit fearful or awesome.

But the best bet is to explain it to a priest maybe before you go to confession and see what he says. I remember being really worried about something I thought was a sin, then going thru rigamorol during confession explaining it, only to have the priest laugh lightly and say it wasn’t a sin at all.

It is very serious.
Mocking the sacrifice of the Lamb of God?

OP: Go to confession, that’s what it is for. To turn your life around. DO it. Don’t delay.

The OP said they **mocked **the mass, not imitated. It sounds like the OP knows what they did was wrong. It was not the same as making a movie, or children imitating a mass out of love.

If you’re seriously that hard up for things to do with your time, I’d be happy to make some suggestions…

2 other points I thought of:
  1. My Carmelite (OCDS) president told us we could be somewhat vague about sins, for instance sexual sins (esp if we fear going to confession & telling the juicy details), & simply say something like, “I have sinned against the 6th Commandment.”
  2. Read in the Breviary today (1/17/17), from Rev 4 & 5, “For you were slain; with your blood you purchase for God men of every race and tongue, of every people and nation. You made of them a kingdom, and priests to serve out God, and they shall reign on the earth.”
Which reminded me of Peter 2:9: “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people to be his very own and to proclaim the wonderful deeds of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”

We Catholics are all priests to serve God, even tho only those ordained can consecrate the Host.

I would advise you to think about it & listen to your heart carefully. It may be that God is calling you not only to the priesthood we all have as Catholics, but perhaps to be an ordained priest, or some other Church office.
