Belief in God genetic?

I was watching insight the other day, and there was a discussion on how much genes and environment affect us. One researcher said they have found that belief in God is genetic and out genes determine whether we were spiritually and religiously inclined or not. Personally I believe that environment does have a hand in religious leanings, especially when someone goes through hardships, these times can cause people to acquire faith or even reject/lose it. What does everyone think?
 
Since God created everything it is no surprise to me that his creation would yearn to have a understanding of him.

God made me to know, love, and serve HIM in ths world, and to be happy forever.
 
As a geneticist, I would love to see this “research.” :rolleyes:

Now if the view of scientism were correct, and humans were merely physical entities, then a gene for believing in God might make sense. But really, do we buy that view of humanity, or do we know that there is more to being human than merely the material aspect?

In Mere Christianity, C. S. Lewis talks about the fact that we are born with the desire to eat, procreate, and seek out God. He then goes on to talk about how God gave us those desires.

So it is genetic… just not in the way the program you were watching claims.
 
Hello,

Jesus came so that His law may be written not on tablets of stone, but in our hearts. So it seems that each human is “encoded” with the law of God, which includes belief in God. As Saint Augustine writes “for Thou madest us for Thyself, and our heart is restless, until it repose in Thee.”
 
It’s neat to think that God encoded a desire to seek him in every cell of our body! Isn’t that cool?:love: :amen:
 
If it is genetic, are atheists mutants in need of loving therapy? 🙂

Our souls have the potential to be rational and to follow the heart’s desire. The hearts, if they are fortunate, will come into contact with the innocent and benign information which will guide them to the knowledge of God, in this world and the next. God is Spirit, and created our spirits to continue on when the genetic material is beyond recovery!
The soul is a spiritual reality that cannot be contained or classified easily, just as its’ Maker, in Whose image it is created.
