Some people say that Benedict XVI is still the pope and that Francis is an anti-pope. I’ve heard some say that the Church teaches that a pope is a pope until death. I also heard of an end-times prophecy that says in the end times, an anti-pope will set himself up in the Vatican and claim himself to be the Pope and many will be decieved and follow him. And that the true Pope and the true Church would be kept underground. Many say that this is the sign of the prophecy unfolding. I don’t know if there is such a prophecy or if it’s been officially recognized by the Church. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous how even Catholics are beginning to attack our new Holy Father. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve come in contact with that are already calling him an antipope, the Antichrist, the False Prophet, etc. I heard some even say that Francis even wants to legalize same-sex marriage, contraception, abortion, divorce, female ordinations, etc, which I cannot believe for one second. Just like Our Lady said at Fatima, the Holy Father would constantly be attacked in latter times. We need to pray for him.

Do you have any references for where you “heard” these things?

If it is a website, do some checking, and see if they are an anti-Catholic website. You can usually find that information under the “about”, or “about us” link that most websites have.

As a Catholic, you should already know the answers to most, if not all of these things.

Popes have resigned, although B16 was the first since the Middle Ages to do so.

There was a valid resignation, and a valid conclave. Francis is Pope. The uncertainty is over.

I doubt antipopes are even possible any more.

You can’t believe everything you hear and read. And when you read (or hear) things like that, remind yourself of what Christ promised His Church. You can’t go wrong trusting that He really meant what He said.

It is amazing to me the nutty things people can come up with. May your heart be at rest.

I do. Have a reference, that is. I am reading a book called The Great Battle Has Begun by Kelly Browning that contains this alleged prophesy. It is quite specific. The reference the author gives for the prophecy is “MDM 1/18/12”.

If anyone knows what that is, chime in. I am thinking of not reading the rest of this book. I don’t think Papa Francis is an antipope at all. I love Papa Ben, and think of him now as Grandpapa Ben. But we have our Holy Father and he is the Vicar of Christ.

I would never have heard of “MDM” if CAF hadn’t had this thread about her:

I’m simply AMZAZED at how persons have a love hate relationship with the Pope.
The Press follows the entire process of electing a new Pope and once he’s in…
POOF…he’s not what they hoped at all.
As one media rep said “We hoped he would grow up the Catholic Church”
Which means of course he’d endorse abortion as a choice, homosexual marriages,
and all you mentioned above.

What’s new.

Since the reformation especiall, and the onset of the printing press it was said his office is the AntiChrist, he might me…
he is an Antipope etc. You’d think non Catholics in these sects wouldn’t want to
waste their time talking about such things. But…
go figure.

The gates of hell shall not prevail…

Ignorance and or

Wishful thinking and or

Lies

ALL or one of the above:

FROM THE CODE OF CANON LAW

THE ROMAN PONTIFF

Can. 331 The bishop of the Roman Church, in whom continues the office given by the Lord uniquely to Peter, the first of the Apostles, and to be transmitted to his successors, is the head of the college of bishops, the Vicar of Christ, and the pastor of the universal Church on earth. By virtue of his office he possesses supreme, full, immediate, and universal ordinary power in the Church, which he is always able to exercise freely.

Can. 332 §1. The Roman Pontiff obtains full and supreme power in the Church by his acceptance of legitimate election together with episcopal consecration. Therefore, a person elected to the supreme pontificate who is marked with episcopal character obtains this power from the moment of acceptance. If the person elected lacks episcopal character, however, he is to be ordained a bishop immediately.

§2. If it happens that the Roman Pontiff resigns his office, it is required for validity that the resignation is made freely and properly manifested but not that it is accepted by anyone

The ones that posted about (and seemed to be backing) ‘MDM’ had fewer then 25 post per poster and seem to belong to the ‘tin-foil hat’ bunch, Catholic wing. 😃 😛

Anyway.
Pope Francis didn’t “set himself up”.
Also he’s not anti-Benedict.
Sooo … no worries. 😉

God just has blessed us with so many great people in these troubled times that we’ll likely continue to see irregularities.

There are currently two men that I am aware of who have declared themselves Pope (google ‘Pope Michael’ to find out about one - cannot remember the name of the other). So not only are antipopes still possible, we have a few amongst us.

Catholic4Jesus, this is what you tell those who have suggest otherwise. They clearly dont know of what they speak. The Church clearly does NOT teach that a pope is pope until he dies.

Canon Law provides for the resignation of the Pope.

God Bless.

Who in the world says that? Not Catholics, I hope.

I was shocked and disappointed when Pope Benedict retired, but on reflection, to give him the respect he deserves, I have to believe that he chose retirement for some reason between him and God, for what he believed would be best for the Catholic Church. There’s no other reason that would be consistent with his life of admirable scholarship and fierce dedication. And Pope Francis strikes me as an extraordinarily Christlike leader. It ill behooves a Christian of any sort to argue over who is more righteous. The New Testament describes the disciples bickering at Jesus’ table over who would be at his right place in heaven, and as I recall, our Lord and Savior didn’t much approve of that line of thinking.
