Despite their forceful denial that Pope Francis doesn’t support optional priestly celibacy, I still don’t think this rules out the “Amazonian exception”, and places like Germany (which is probably the real end goal of this effort).
In other news, it seems like all of the liberal Catholic theologians are up in arms about Pope Benedict making his opinion known on this topic, which is not surprising.

The initiative referred to is a newly announced book on priestly celibacy and the crisis in the Church and priesthood, co-authored by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and Cardinal Robert Sarah, who is head of the pope’s liturgical office.
