Pope Emeritus Benedict (with parenthetical addition mine for context) . . .
These radical ideologies (radical atheism and radical Islam) require us to urgently develop a convincing concept of the state that will stand up to the confrontation between these challenges and help to overcome it.

May God bless Benedict XVI who was Pope when I was received into the Catholic church.
I admire him for his wisdom and courage.

He’s right. Radical Islam and Radical Atheism are both problematic.

:clapping: It’s good to see a former Pope speaking out on this!

So why all the long faces?

“During the agony of the previous half-century, Poland gave the world two great figures — Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński and Pope St. John Paul II — who not only reflected upon these issues, but also carried within themselves suffering and vivid experiences; thus they continue to give us guidelines for the future.”

We should carefully and immediately read these guidelines.

This is crucial, and sadly under-reported. Note that Pope Emeritus is not just calling for Christians to counter dangerous excesses of our opponents, though I think we need to do that. More important, he calls us to develop a “convincing concept of the state”. What exactly are we for?
  • A state that will defend the individual person, from conception to natural death;
  • A state that will balance protection for its citizens, with some measured degree of openness for refugees, and fairness to immigrants.
  • Distributism: A state that will empower families and individuals to make decisions for their children’s schooling, self employment wherever possible, small employers rather than big corporations, local government rather than national or international government.
  • A preferential option for the poor.
  • Breakup of the giant media monopolies, allow for a free flow of ideas.

I would add that we should look to support the wealth creation through companies (i.e. capitalism) but also crack down very hard on the corruption of large companies who create pay structures that support revolving positions for the financial elite.

I really like Benedict and I think his ideas start with creating Catholic networks and recognising that we are not secular.

Only then can we have a truly shared Catholic focus.
