Quick question for any Benedictine Oblates on here.

If you move to another state for work, school, etc. are you allowed to transfer to another oblate group? I know that you affiliate with a particular monastery but also that you are called to live in the regular world and such things happen.

Peace of Christ,

My understanding is that you can, but the transfer to group is under no obligation to take you, or to take you “as is”, ie, they can require you to re-do formation.

Thanks for the response!

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

I ordered a couple of books on Benedictine Spirituality and Oblates.

The Rule of Benedict: A Spirituality for the 21st Century (Spiritual Legacy Series)
By: Joan Chittister, OSB

How to Be a Monastic and Not Leave Your Day Job: An Invitation to Oblate Life (Voices from the Monastery)
By: Brother Benet Tvedten, OSB

If anyone has read these and has comments, please feel free to share.

Peace,

Peace,
I’ve been thinking of getting the Chittister book. Please do a review when you’ve done reading it (orthodox? worth reading? etc) Same for Brother Benet’s (please)

I would highly recommend that you get the Rule of St Benedict translated by Leonard Doyle published by the Liturgical Press.

Wonderful translation, and it is arranged so that each day has it’s reading.

I read it daily. It’s awesome 🙂

I’ll look into it thanks. As for the books I ordered, I will do my best but knowing little about Benedictine spirituality and what constitutes orthodoxy within that tradition I may not be of much use. I did forward both titles to the Monk I have been in contact with to get his opinion on them. I will let you know what he has to say after I hear back from him.

Peace, and thanks again for your assistance.

Orthodoxy within the Benedictines (or any order, really) is the same as orthodoxy within the Church. 🙂

Put another way, if it sounds wacko, it is, no matter which order is saying it. 😃

My pleasure 👍

Fair enough. I should be able to figure that part out easy enough.

I found this website the other day which has some great info on Oblates. Down towards the bottom of the page are links to letters for Oblates and those interested. Great stuff,

Peace,

Regarding the two books above, this is the response I got from the monk I have been communicating with.
Fr. Martin:
Those are two good books, any by Joan Chittister is recommended, she is a Benedictine Nun best known author.

I knew I had seen Sister Joan’s name somewhere before but I couldn’t place it. It turns out that she is one of the sisters who has been vocally advocating for women’s ordination, against hierarchical authority within the Church, etc. for some time. I am sorry, but I will not be able to provide a review of her book as I will not be reading anyone who openly dissents from Church teaching on such a crucial issue.

I have decided to purchase this instead and send back the Chittister book.

Share in the Kingdom: A Commentary on the Rule of St. Benedict for Oblatesby Benet Tvedten

I have to admit that this has shaken me a bit considering the ringing endorsement that Fr. Martin gave me regarding her books that I quoted above.

Does anyone have thoughts on this matter? Faithfulness to the Church is extremely important to me. In fact, it is an absolute deal breaker. With that in mind, I do not want to put myself into a situation where things could become a concern down the road. If you only visit a particular monastery a few times a year, it may be difficult to find out about things such as that until after the fact.

Again, any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks in advance, and Peace.

I also got a strong endorsement from a monk on Joan Chittister’s book on the Rule. When I told him that I’m not her biggest fan, he responded that he wasn’t either, but her book on the Rule was still outstanding.

If two different monks from two different monasteries have said this, perhaps they know what they’re talking about. Someone can be controversial when talking about certain topics and be orthodox on a completely different topic.

Very good point and I thank you for making it. I guess part of me hates the thought of lining her pockets so that she and her organization has more money to do what they do. Maybe I am just being hardheaded. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time.

Peace,

Peace,
This is exactly why I won’t be buying it. I knew that there was something about her.

Thanks Jason!
