OBLATES’ WORLD CONGRESS 2009

The Second World Congress of Oblates will take place in Rome, Italy, from the 2nd to 10th October, 2009.

As with the last Congress in 2005, the list of attendees is limited and has been fixed and set by now. However, those of us who cannot go to the Congress may be lucky enough to have some attendee take good notes and give everyone a good report.

Part of the reason for this post is to see if anyone reading this post is going to the Congress and to express my request, plea, and supplication, as the web site states, “that the participants on their return home share their experiences with other oblates in their monastery or region.”

Please! 🙂

I think - let me ask the Oblate Director - that some Oblates from my Monastery are headed to the Oblate Congress. I wish I was going along with them! 😃

Thank you. Yes, I wish I could go too.

Cloister Outreach hopes to eventually get a proposal together for both the Benedictines and the Augustinians, asking them to recognize the Gilbertian/Gilbertine interpretation of their charism.

The Gilbertines were the only native British order, and were suppressed by Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries. They did not survive because they had only one house outside of England, and that was in Scotland. Their nuns started as anchoresses attached to the church in Sempringham, and were given the OSB rule. Lay sisters evolved from the anchoress’ assistants, and one thing led to another. Canons following the OSA rule were founded to take care of the sisters’ spiritual needs. Lay brothers were founded so everyone could eat of the Gilbertines’ own fields.

I am in the process of updating the Gilbertine Renewal site, but the first paragraph above is what we intend to do as far as renewing the charism is concerned.

Perhaps some oblates could show this to the Oblate head honcho. Oblates living the Gilbertian interpretation is an easy way to get it recognized.

Blessings,
Cloisters

I have just returned from the 2009 World Congress of Benedictine Oblates. I set up a thread on my Blog page for my day-to-day account of the Congress. Look for BarbNeilon on WordPress.Com. Since I was only able to post a short message on most days, and some not at all, I will be filling in the days in the days to come. The Congress organizers also promised that all the documents of the presentations will be posted on the Congress web site as posted below. Many photos are already up for each day.

Keep returning often as new information will be forthcoming as the delegates begin to “digest” the messages of the Congress. If your monastery sent one or more delegates, be sure and ask them to tell you about it. Each delegate brought to the Congress a unique perspective and thus has a unique story to tell.
