I was wondering if anyone knew of an abbey that has an internet chapter of Benedictine Oblates.

Thank you.

I’m not aware of anyone who has an Internet chapter. However, monasteries often have groups that meet some distance away. I’m not sure where exactly you’re located, but there are monasteries in Illinois and Indiana that might be of interest to you.

St. Meinrad Archabbey has a chapter in Merrillville, IN. That may be near enough for you(?) You’d be hard-pressed to find a more awesome abbey in the US, but I’m biased 😃

I happen to know the oblate director there, and two monks.

👍 I’m blessed to be a short drive from St. Meinrad, and have visited/retreated there often, as well as having been graced by the ministry of several of their priests, including our Archbishop Emeritus. In fact, I was received into the Church by one of the monks filling in for the local pastor during his sabbatical…

I work with two of the priests/monks and your OD on a committee in Rome (World Oblate Congress). Great folks!

I’m also blessed to be only a 35 minute drive from my own abbey (Saint-Benoît-du-Lac in Quebec). Apart from Sunday Mass I go every Wednesday, I volunteer my time working in the library there; cataloguing newly received books (we inherited a couple of large collections from a priest and an elderly oblate recently), and working on a few other projects for them, namely bringing their Library of Congress alternate classification for Catholic books up to date. Everyone should have a Benedictine monk as a boss!

I find this kind of connection with the abbey extremely rewarding when it’s possible. Of course being retired helps. A couple of other retired oblates who live further away will come to the abbey for a week or two and help out in other areas; gardening, the porter’s desk, etc.

Would you happen to know the contact information? Merrillville is only 45 min. away.

My abbey is a couple of hours away so I can’t just pop in. I would love it if I were closer and didn’t have to spend so much time driving back and forth.
