Here in the Diocese of Tucson we recently bid a very sad farewell to our community of Benedictine sisters of Perpetual Adoration. At their closing mass the priest said in his homily that besides taking vows of poverty,chastity and obedience, Benedictine sisters also take vows of stability and continued daily conversion.
I was struck by this. It’s easy to see how the sisters reflect this in the way they have picked up from their mother house in Switzerland to come to the US and again when they left Clyde, MO, to establish a convent in Tucson.
Now that they’re gone we’ve lost not just a beautiful community of nuns, but also the most beautiful, silent, prayerful worship space in Tucson. Those of that remain are also called to be stable and to continued daily conversion. What that means to me is to keep my feet rooted in the faith, but to be open daily to what God is calling me to do.
I miss those nuns, but it can’t be denied. Their spirit continued to be felt. I’m just grateful I got to know them when I did.
