Anyone have any experience with the Benedictine monastery in Latrobe, PA? I’ve been thinking about a vocation for awhile now and have an interest in the monastic life as opposed to being a diocesan priest.

I plan to spend a weekend up there in October, but was just curious if anyone knew more about the order or what it takes to become a monk.

I’ve known a number of OSB’s from Latrobe, including a cousin. They’re very holy and prayerful people. My friend’s spiritual director is one of the Monks in Latrobe and he has nothing but great things to say about him.

If you’re gonna be in the area in October, you should check out the Franciscan Friars (TOR) in Lorretto as well. They’re not Monks obviously, but they are a great religious community.

I live in west-central PA, and grew up in a parish staffed by only OSB’s. They are wonderful and holy priests. I visited St. Vincent last summer, and it is a beautiful campus and church.

Does anyone offhand know what the requirements for becoming a Benedictine monk are? I’m guessing you’ve got to be debt free and have no attachments to the outside world.

I should’ve asked Father when I had him on the phone last night, but I just didn’t think about it.

It’s not a site for Latrobe but I’m sure it’s similar.

Their site is monks.stvincent.edu/

Hope it helps, and I hope it’s stuff you don’t already have. God bless
