Benedictines of Norcia/Monastero San Benedetto

Has anybody had any experience with this community? I know they’re all the way out in Italy but I am wondering what they are like, etc. They seem very Traditional and I have got in touch with them regarding a vocation.

They seems pretty good from the website info. Just to be sure, are you familiar with the Benedictines of Clear Creek in Oklahoma, who also celebrate the Traditional Mass?

Do you know how many monks are at Clear Creek Abbey now?? Has anyone visited the Clear Creek monks; if so did you like it there??
 
I’ve talked with them on the telephone(Clear Creek Benedictines). One of these days I plan on visiting them for a few days. I’m very impressed with them. They have a very good video that pretty well explains their history and their daily lives.

I listin to Vespers daily and to Friday Compline from the Norcia Benedictines.

In the Liturgy of the Hours, yes. It only varies according to the seasons in the Little Office.
at least thats my understanding.

A little known fact about the current Liturgy of the Hours, is that it is permissible to use Sunday Compline every day. The reason is that many communities have had the long tradition of reciting Compline from memory in the dark. In fact in the Monastic Office (according to St. Benedict), Compline was the same every day (ps. 4, 90 and 133, Vulgate numbering).

If you look carefully at the structure of the LOTH, you’ll find that the psalms for Compline on weekdays are repeated elsewhere in the psalter at other offices. So if you take up this tradition, you are not missing out on any psalms.

In the monastic schema that I use, there is the option to use Sunday psalms every day (in this case ps, 4, 90 and 133), while doing Vigils over two weeks and using the psalms from weekday Compline for one of the two nocturns.

From the General Instructions of the Liturgy of the Hours:
  1. After evening prayer I of Sunday the psalmody consists of Ps 4 and Ps 134; after evening prayer II of Sunday it consists of Ps 91.

On the other days psalms are chosen that are full of confidence in the Lord; it is permissible to use the Sunday psalms instead, especially for the convenience of those who may wish to pray night prayer from memory.

Thank you, OraLabora, for the clarification. I have begun really looking at this closer. The reason I suggested that particular youtube recording was that the Monks sing the latin but the english appears on screen. so if you are “weak” in latin it makes it easier to learn by listening and still being able to pray the psalms and antiphons.

In case anyone is looking for the latin text to the compline which is chanted on the above Youtube, I found it and just prayed it. Was awesome.

You can find the compline at Divinum Officium.

What I did was listen to the Youtube but read the text at the Divinum site. To do that, you choose:
  • psalms
  • pre-trident monastic
  • regular
  • English (this will give you latin side by side with English. If you just want the Latin, choose Latin.)
  • Select the Hour you want. In this case, I chose Completorium, which is the Compline
You will have the office in Latin and English.

*tip - anywhere you see a bubble, if you click on it, you will get a pop-up with more text.
