Hello,
I recently went on retreat and here’s what happened let me know if this is permissible or not?
The Eucharist was exposed and left unattended.
The priest was wearing jeans and a tshirt.
The priest gave the benediction while wearing jeans and a tshirt and did not use the veil.

I think the mass vestment are out of fashion. That was the way people wore in the middle ages, not anymore.
sometimes I pity the priest, full August, full heat, wearing those vestments. Poor fellow. Now, if the oufit is moderns, it should be fignified, solemn and beutiful not shorts and slippers…

He did wear his vestments during mass, but I found it odd that for the benediction he was in jeans and a tshirt.
Is it a requirement that he use the h. veil, or any particular clothes?

You think the church should just change everything every few years to remain “in fashion?”

By the way, the vestments were worn a lot longer ago than just the middle ages.

The first item could be noted as blasphemous. The second two simply as scandalous. It would have been better that there was NO Benediction.

As Chesterton once said, “I would rather be a member of a church that is 2000 years out of date and constent, than of one that is a year out of date and always trying to catch up.”😃

See question to Fr. Jay Toborowsky on EWTN re vestments.
Church documents urge priests to wear ALL the proper vestments when they celebrate Mass. To pick and choose what you want to wear makes the Priest a bit of an egoist…

Fashion is not bad.
Trousers are more confortable for women than skirts. Fashion makes one feel more conofrtable, otherwise you would walk around naked.
Yes, you need to adapt Mass vestment, in a dignified way. Nuns who had those horrible habits from the 17th century adapted.
Look, are you agains an adaptation if it is in a very very dignified way?

Fashion is terrible when we’re talking about an organization which seeks to maintain perpetuity through 2000+ years of history and beyond.

I am sorry if I read you wrong, but the mass and especially the Eucharist is much more important than the comfort of the priest or deacon serving in such a liturgy. A sacred minister, priest, deacon or bishop, should wear the proper vestments when exposing and reposing the Blessed Sacrament, especially if benediction is to be celebrated.

If a duly commissioned lay person exposes and reposes the Blessed Sacrament, then the vestment is not required. But even in that case, and especially if the person is a duly instituted acolyte, the option for the appropriate vestment, an alb and cincture could be worn; especially if the minister is an acolyte.

Handling the Blessed Sacrament, especially in front of the faithful is an important job, a sacred job which must not be taken lightly. To do otherwise can cause confusion and possibly teach disbelief in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist itself. It matters how we ministers approach and handle the Eucharist, always.

Now let’s do the reverse.
Suppose the Popeasks worldwide for ideas for new vestments (it wont happen, sure!! it is an idela situation). suppose that there are dozens of thousand of ideas. Suppose that the Pope and all the bishops decide on some dozens of authorized outfits. what do you have to say to that? Why would you defend before the Pope keeping these vestments( the Pope would ask for everybody comments!)
The vestments ar not for the confort of the priest, I think that is cruel. You are not the priest who everyday say mass in Hot countries with 40 degreees Centigrades in Africa with vestments that were created for snow covered countries in Europe, with temperatures below zero in the winter.
I repeat: dignified vestment, I repeat, diginfied, dignified.
All the priest wore cassoch and had their had cut in the top of the head in a circular form and everything changed.
Do I respect less the priest? NO! Do I confuse them? NO Most of them have a slight sing that tells me that they are priest. for me it is more than enough to respect them. I went swimming with priest win swimming trunks. did I respect them less? NO!

The question is dignity and respect, not that only with one type of vestment you can have dignity and respect.

Extremely light fabrics are available to be made into all vestments, including cassocks and chasubles. Extremely light cottons, or very light, thin linens, for example. I really don’t think there’s a rule that all vestments have to made of heavy brocades.

There are exceptions for the very situations you bring up, so don’t go there. Now, as far as your imaginary scenario, it doesn’t deserve a response.

My only point was the sacred minister must wear the proper vestment for the duty being performed. If it’s benediction, he should wear the proper vestments. Street clothes are not vestments.

I never knew that Italy is snow covered. Learn something new every day.

Do you have an opinion about the 40 degrees in Africa, that what we we were talking about? ie, should the priests in Africa be forced to use vestments that were made for European Winter (let’s forget that in Italy there is no snow and that besides Italy, there is Germany, England, France, Sweden, and so on) ? 😊

So the vestments are made to crucify the priest? Would you mind to bring some Church documents on that? Or is it YOUR opinion only?

I highlighted What you wrote.

Listen, we may discuss up to a point. I was talking seriously. What I said was that I respet a priest in swimming trunks because he is a priest and, as he is not in Mass vestments I would not respect less. Your answer was to ridicule, making the priest say Mass in swimming trunks (you imagined that !!! And it was fun for you seeing the priest in swimming trunks saying mass ! And it was fun for you !!!) an impossibility.

How can I say? Nothing. Only that I stop here the dialogue with you for it is impossible.

I do believe we have a language/culture barrier. I don’t think you understand what my point is, and I evidently do not understand your point either.

If you think wearing proper vestments is crucifying the priest, then I am not sure how to respond. There are light weight vestments available for the extreme hot condition in which you speak. There are exceptions for reasons of lack of vestments and other situations. I’m sure that St. Max Colbe didn’t have proper vestments, but he still managed to say mass in the concentration camp.

The comment about the priest in swimming trunks has absolutely nothing to do with vestments in mass or benediction, which is what this thread is about. The way I responded was my way of showing the absurdity of your comment by being absurd.

The thread is about a priest who did not wear vestments while presiding at benediction, my comment was geared towards that. When we serve as sacred ministers; priests, deacons, and bishops, we SHOULD wear the vestments appropriate to the ritual. Benediction minister should be vested in an alb and stole, with a cope and veil; the cope & possibly the veil may be omitted. Is it celebrated without these vestments? Yes, should it be celebrated without these vestments? No.

If I sound too strict for you then we will have to agree to disagree. This is the way I was taught and the documents back my opinion up on these points.

PS. There are no documents that require priests to be crucified. I never said that, you did.
