Is Benediction still performed? and with the Latin Hymns? Tantum Ego etc.

I was organist in my last year (1959) at a Jesuit College and Benediction was once a week. The chapel did have a reasonable pipe organ then.

If Benediction is performed where is the Monstrance placed, now that there are no High Altars?

We still have Benediction and we still sing the “O Salutaris Hostea” when the Blessed Sacrament is Exposed on the First Friday and we sing the Tantum Ergo" whenever we have Benediction. The priest or deacon places the monstrance on the altar.

in this parish yes, once a month, following a Holy Hour, O Salutaris at exposition, Tantum Ergo at reposition, closing with Holy God we Praise thy Name, and monstrance is placed on the altar, at neighboring parish, once a week, ditto.

In my diocese, practically every parish has Exposition with Benediction. Some have it on First Fridays, some once a week, some have a daily Holy Hour, some perpetual Adoration…just depends on the size and schedule of the parish.

The monstrance is place on the altar, etc, same as what previous posters said.

The parish I go to while at work does Benediction every Friday after the noon Mass. We sing O Salutaris Hostia and two verses of Tantum Ergo in English. Adoration and Exposition continues for 4 1/2 hours.

We have Benediction every Sunday during Lent and Advent and the first Friday of each month. We sing the “O Salutaris Hostea” and “Tantum Ergo”. The priest places the monstrance on the altar.

We have it every Saturday morning and on the 5th of the month both before mass at the conclusion of 24-hour Exposition. We sing the “O Salutaris Hostea” as the priest processes the monstrance from the Adoration Chapel to the main Church area. We then sing the “Tantum Ergo”. We have no accompaniment, but get a pretty good response both for those and for the hymns at the mass . We have about 100-130 in attendence usually. Occasionally a priest will try it in English; he gets about half the response that we get when we do it in Latin. We do the rest of the Benediction in English.

Most certainly, the Benedictine monastery to which I am affiliated has it every Sunday after Vespers, with a prolonged period of adoration afterwards, and every first Friday of the month. Also on solemnities.

Benediction is frequently broadcast on EWTN from the Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament andis apparently well attended.

Every Weds in our parish, plus on other major feasts

👋 At least once per month (first Wednesday) in my parish.

Who doesn’t have a high altar? (Though ours is now primarily the altar of reposition, and a table has been placed for the altar of sacrifice)

Depends what you mean by that. Newer churches only have one main altar. So while it could still be called the high altar, its the only one.
I know what it means.

I just get bugged sometimes by comments like *there are no high altars *-- My heart goes out to those posters whose worship spaces are not all they might desire (my parish’s is not, but I try not to gripe about it) – But:
  • “They” didn’t “tear down all the high altars after Vatican II” – My parish still has one (which continues to be used as the altar of reposition), as do many parishes in my area.
  • Ditto: “They” didn’t “rip out the communion rails” – My parish (and others) still have them, even if they are not used as such.
Apologies for whinginess, :o

There are also a fair few Episcopal/Anglican churches that still offer Solemn Evensong & Benediction. The church I attend for it sings the hymns in English to the plainsong melodies.
