Berkeley College:Arabs Attack Jewish Students

Arab Students at UC Berkeley Disrupt Israel Event, Attack Jews
by David Shamma
(IsraelNN.com)
Arab students disrupted a pro-Israel event at the campus of the University of California at Berkeley Thursday night, unfurling a large Palestinian flag in front of a crowd of hundreds of supporters of Israel who were enjoying a pro-Israel hip-hop concert. The event was sponsored by the Zionist Freedom Alliance student group.

The Arab students unfurled the large flag on a balcony above the outdoor site where the concert was taking place, inciting a provocation right in front of the concert-goers, who were enjoying the event as part of the campus’ Israel Liberation Week. Several Jewish concertgoers went into the building to ask the Arabs to remove the flag – but were viciously attacked, with one male concert goer knocked down from a blow on the back of his head, witnesses said.

College alumnus Gabe Weiner, who was helping run the concert, was assaulted by the leader of the anti-Israel group, Husam Zakharia, who also attacked one of the performers, Yehuda De Sa. The fight was finally broken up by John Moghtader, a senator in the UC Berkelely student organization. Police were called in and arrested Zakharia along with others from his group, charging them with battery. Witnesses said that the Arab students shouted anti-Semitic curses and epithets throughout the incident, calling the Jews “Nazis” and “dogs,” and threatening to kill them. According to one witness, as many as 20 anti-Israel students participated in the attacks.

In a statement, the Zionist Freedom Alliance said “we call on state officials, the President of the University of California, the Chancellor, the Dean of Students, faculty, and the student body to take a unified stand against the continued harassment of Jewish and pro-Israel students on this campus, particularly by members of Students for Justice in Palestine,” the anti-Israel group whose leaders began the incitement and attacked the concertgoers.

Pro-Israel students at UC Berkeley have long complained of the anti-Israel and anti-Semitic harassment they have been subject to. Tikvah, a Jewish student group at the college, displayed on its web site numerous examples of anti-Israel and anti-Semitic graffiti, with anti-Israel elements defacing property with their screed. Jewish students complained that the only media coverage given to the event, in the Berkeley campus newspaper, was one sided. “Funny how the battery citation against Husam of SJP isn’t even mentioned [in the article], and the comment which purports to be from an objective bystander is actually from one of the top people in Students for Justice in Palestine,” commented Ariel, one of the concertgoers.

Meanwhile, the anti-Israel group is planning to file a petition to remove from office Moghtader, who tried to break up the fight.

Shameful that they ruined a chance to protest peacefully for a legitimate cause by being vulgar and violent.

So the Arabs hung a flag and the Israeli’s took that as a sign to go start a fight?

Israeli’s have already killed at least 72 Arab children this year alone, more than 1000 since Sept. 2000. rememberthesechildren.org/remember2008.html

Hanging a flag in another country hardly seems like justice for those who died.

I pray that Israeli’s will turn from evil and begin to truly love the Lord and begin to love their Palestinian neighbors. youtube.com/watch?v=hefIti-uFUo&feature=related youtube.com/watch?v=QH0o_07BBk0&feature=related youtube.com/watch?v=7mO8CWSam2o

FYI may Palestinians are Christians and have been since the beginning of the Patriarchate of Jeruselem by St. James the Apostle in the 1st Century. youtube.com/watch?v=AW9Anaw2HHE&feature=related youtube.com/watch?v=oNRD2BVjbaE

What a horrible response. But that seems to be the typical anti-semitism from the GO in particular. Simply excuse any violence towards Jews and excuse Arab’s and Palestinian’s crimes and instigation with Iranian and Syrian weapons as if they do not happen. You are simply uninformed or unconcerned when Jewish children are murdered by Palestinians. For nearly every Israeli attack on Palestinians you will find an missile attack or suicide bombing that provoked it.

It is fine with you that Jews were assaulted for asking someone to remove a flag meant to instigate. It is fine that they called them Nazis and dogs. If it were reversed would you have the same opinion? Doubtful. Calling the people who lost 3/4 of their own to the Nazis, Nazis is digusting.

Most Palestinians are muslims the rest are dhimmi who are spoon fed Jew hatred. Being born into Christianity does not make one superior or more worthy of compassion than Jews.

Your post would have been fine if it were not so biased and selective and of course it reveals an all to familiar bent of your overly politicized Church that has no sympathy for Jewish suffering as you obviously don’t either.

You are also ignorant of history if you believe that most of the Arab Christians in Israel or the modern Palestinians in general have been there since the fist century. St. James was a Jew as were all of those first Christians in Jerusalem.

Also interesting is that the Greek Orthodox Patriachate was set up my the them Muslim ruler who removed the Catholic Bishop because he felt the Greeks were more easy to control. Now of course Greeks think they have some stonger claim to Israel than the Jews do. Of course God’s kingdom is not of this world and the Greeks have no business in the Holy Land to begin with.

Get some Christian balance on this. You do, after all, worship a Jew. Shame on you for excusing violence and hatred towards Jews who God chose to give us our Lord, His apostles and the Theotokos through.

Nor does being born a Palestinian Muslim make one less worthy of compassion.

No, we worship God.

Did I say it did? I was not the one excusing violence towards anyone. I find the the silence about Muslim Palestinian violence and oppression towards Christian Palestinians astonishing.
No, we worship God.
We worship the God-man. Christ is fully God and fully man. Christ is not divided. We do not worship half of Him. We do not worship his ethnicity. Still our Incarnate Lord was and is a Jew.

I do find, given the subtle bias of your first post, it ironic that you choose to call me out instead of “St. Marina”. It is truly sad how trendy Jew hatred is among supposed Christians. but that is all the rage with Europe’s selective media so I can’t really blame you for being ignorant. You are young and likely grew up on a steady diet of hearing how bad the Jews and Israelis are from the antisemitic BBC.

I don’t hate Jews. I’m actually partly ethnically Jewish (Ashkenazi), please don’t make such assumptions, twice on this forum today I have been erroneously accused of prejudice and it is wearing a little thin.

Can you provide any Church document, scriptural or otherwise that says Christ is still a Jew?

Set it all aside. IN the United States, we have rules. One group had permission to have their event. The other group behaved in violation of laws. They should be punished for doing so.

I was not born at the time, but I miss the days when Berkeley radicals only smoked weed and had sit-ins.

Agreed, they broke the law and must now pay for their transgression however justified they may feel their cause to be.

You need to read my post again. I did not say you hated Jews. It was a reference to the other poster and antisemtism in general. I apologize if it read that way. You are certainly biased. That is not hatred of course.

I am sorry but your question is absurd. What Church document or scripture is there to suggest that he somehow ceased to be a Jew? Did he shed His humanity when he was resurrected? What would ever prompt such and idea? If he came as a Irishman would you ever have such a thought that he might somehow no longer be Irish in his humanity? Why the desire to un-Jew Him?

So, you accuse me of hatred, have a subtle dig at whether or not I am actually a Christian, then, having accused me of prejudice, you go right ahead and decide that young+European automatically means ignorant. Way to prove a point mate.

I know this is a serious discussion but I just have to say that the idea of someone running into the heavenly room where Jesus is and yelling, “Jesus you’ve been de-Jewed!” was pretty funny.

OK, the slight deflection into mirth is over. Please resume your serious dialogue.

WE do not worship Jesus because he was a practicing Jew. Further, just because he was a practicing Jew are we required to allow Jewish people free-reign on any actions they want.

Yeah I’d still question it. Jesus came for all and to suggest that He is still of a particular ethnic group, an inconsequential detail in the wider picture, just doesn’t seem right to me. I am not blindly attatched to my ethnicity.

As someone who grew up partly in and around Berkeley/Oakland (and went to UCB for that matter) this is horribly saddening. One of the classes I took happened to be an upper-division International Relations course concerning Palestine-Israeli relations, and there were LOTS of Jewish (Israeli and US or elsewhere-born) origin, Palestinians (and Jordanians and Syrians and so on) and a whole spectrum of students from all over the world - and it was terrific! Even the few kids who felt a little nervous or unqualified sharing opinions and stories warmed right up after a big falafel feast (we made it a semi-regular thing to have Middle-eastern/Mediterranean food whenever possible, since that course usually intersected with everyones’ lunch schedule!)

But well…Berkeley. yeah. Some days I could hardly make it to classes from trying to negotiate through crowds of protesters, drunken fratboys, various loonies…hooboy. At times i felt safer living in the West Oakland slums, and that’s no walk in any park, believe it. Hope things mellow down there, and yeah, those who broke the law should certainly be prosecuted. Sigh. 😦

I am glad my clarification and apology for my bad communication was accepted.

Everyone is prejudice. I said you expressed bias, because… you did. I did also. But you seem to be proving my point. You ignore something disgusting and attack me for attacking a crude “those Jews deserved it” comment from “St. Marina”. That shows a bias. Sorry if you choose not to accept the rebuke of a brother. Had you not excused the post I originally responded to, and posted your first post, I would not have pointed out the obvious bias. As I said, bias does not equal hatred.

I never said either thing. Still I am familiar enough with the difference between antisemitism and legitimate criticism of actions by Jewish individuals or Israel. I was responding to the former. I know the difference very well.

Also, Jesus was and is a Jew, or Hebrew if you prefer. So were all the Apostles and the Blessed Virgin. Those who hate Jews, don’t get to pretend The Holy Family and the Apostles were somehow not Jews. Of course we don’t worship there ethnicity but we should respect it and it should give Jew haters who say they are Christians great pause.

Look, I am not trying to be unreasonable but you did not say ‘‘anti Jew bias’’ you said ‘‘Hatred of Jews’’ You accused me of hate, if you knew me, you would not have done that.

You accused me of ignorance, not knowing my level of knowledge, you brought my home nation into this saying that they have fed me anti Jew bias (coincidentally the White Nationalist groups I have spent the past few years trying to shut down accuse the BBC of the very opposite).

Listen, I did not say you specifically hated Jews. I don’t know why I have to clarify more than once. I went from particular to general and I already explained this.

I happen to love your homeland. I am very proud of my English blood. But you sound, rightly or wrongly, to me like so many others I have read or known who do seem to express if not an anti-Jewish bias, an anti-Israel one or at least an imbalanced view of the conflict and perhaps an overly romancticized view of the Palestinians. I am glad you oppose white nationalism. But really, and I am not, LET ME BE CLEAR accusing you of this, the worst and most dangerous antisemiticism of this generation is the subtle anti-semitism of the American and European left (and far right) who simply buy whatever the latest talking point from the muslim world about Jews and Israel is.

You may be very knowledgable, but I can only respond and drawe conclusions from what is posted and what is ignored. Perhaps, I projected to much of the words of others onto you. If I did I am sorry. If I am wrong please prove me wrong and I will gladly issue a public apology.
