If you consider Star Wars as two trilogies, I definitely like the third movie in each of those.😃

Also, Lord of the Rings is pretty awesome, too. 😛

Sure, those can be two trilogies. :o
In the newer ones, I’d agree with you on the 3rd being the best. Revenge of the Sith, I think.

On this one I like them in the order they were made, 1, 2, 3. The books I like 1, 3, then 2. :o

As mentioned, Return of the King from the Lord of the Rings trilogy (though personally, my favorite LOTR movie is the first, Fellowship of the Ring).

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is a strong candidate … if for no other reason than having Sean Connery and Harrison Ford playing father and son. 😃

The Bourne Ultimatum … excellent finale for the second best trilogy of the 2000s, after LOTR.

I don’t agree on Return of the Jedi from the original Star Wars trilogy. It’s good, but I think it’s nevertheless the weakest film of that trilogy. A couple of reasons: (1) going up against a Death Star again makes one suspect the writers were running out of ideas at that point. (2) Ewoks - nuff said.

On the other hand, Revenge of the Sith IS the best of the prequel trilogy … but considering the two episodes that came before it, that may be damning with faint praise.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. {if we can still consider it a trilogy}

The first three movies are the “original trilogy”. Crystal Skull is more of a “revisiting” of the franchise, seeing as it came out nearly two decades after Last Crusade…

I think the 3 Indiana Jones and the first 3 Bourne movies all go together as trilogies. So fair enough on those! For Bourne though, I think the first one is the best. Although that is a rare one where all 3 movies are good. The recent Bourne Legacy was also very good. Although, now I’m off trilogy topic… :o

I’m fond of the Dark Knight Rises, it nicely wrapped up the story line, created the chance for the rise of a new batman and gave Batman a happy ending without destroying the character. I also liked the American WWII trilogy of Destination Tokyo, Thirty Seconds over Tokyo, and The Purple Heart. Although some parts of these would horrify the sensibilities of a modern artist as being somewhat racist, especially The Purple Heart, they provide a complete --albeit heavily fictionalized – account of the Doolittle Raid.

I also liked Return of the King in the LOTR trilogy and in the Bourne trilogy, the Bourne Ultimatum was the best, but I was somewhat disappointed with the Bourne Legacy. The Indiana Jones Trilogy was superb and each film was as good or better than the one before it. The worst of the first three Indy films was Temple of Doom.

My thoughts exactly. I will also have to say the Revenge of the Sith is the only Star Wars I did not actually like at all. I do not go in for the dark side of anything and do not like unhappy endings.

The Return of the King is good. Revenge of the Sith as mentioned is the best of the prequels, in my opinion.

I think the best is Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, I don’t count the alleged fourth Indiana Jones like I don’t count the Star Wars prequels.
Return of the King
Hannibal (if you go, Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal order)

Last Crusade was great, but I would say Raiders was better.

Back to the Future III, Toy Story 3, Godfather III, and The Good the Bad and the Ugly are all, I think, at least as good if not better than the others in the series.

And I really liked Ocean’s 13 🙂

My answer was going to be Back to the Future III, even before I saw LilyM’s list.

I also liked Last Crusade.

Wow … I thought it was general consensus that Godfather III is the weakest film of that trilogy.

Also, as to your first statement … the question, as posed, is not which third film in a trilogy is better than the original. The question is, among third films, which is the best.

I rate the Bourne Ultimatum highly as well - I don’t recall seeing any other trilogy where the last installment was the best in the series.

Return of the Jedi was great entertainment, but the movie had to carry the burden of being the last movie that followed A New Hope and the Empire Strikes Back. The confrontation between Luke, Vader, and Palpatine alone makes Return of the Jedi worth watching.
