I guess maybe I can see that, but Lord Prepare Me reminds me a lot more of Go Light Your World.

I don’t particularly care for that hymn but in Canada’s Catholic Book of Worship III the line is “that saved and strengthened me”.
You are the second poster to make that statement (or something similar). Actually when they sing it in my church, I always modify the verse to sing “that saved and set me free”. I sing softly, (out of charity to those who would have to put up with someone not musically talented) so I doubt anyone notices.

Oh I’m glad I listened to these! I really like them. Thanks for sharing!!
You’re welcome. Glad you liked them. Two bad both are one Solemnity each specific. I’ll find a way to sing “One Sacrifice…” again somehow! The lyrics are dynamic. Can’t wait until this weekend for the Sequence.

Good examples of two contemporary pieces that people say they hate. But then again, they might hate these two also. No bother though, they work very well in my church.

Best hymns generally are those from the 50s and before. Worst hymns in my mind: Gather Us In, Eagles Wings, Take and Eat and similar.

Too many to list. Among the very best:

Be Thou my Vision

The Spacious Firmament on High (I wonder if Catholics even know this. It is a meditation on the creation and the Creator based on nature)

Crown Him with many crowns (diadem)

Jesus, Lover of my soul (aberystwyth)

All People that on earth do dwell (Old 100th)

Oh God our Help in ages past (St Anne)

I sing a song of the saints of God

All the Salve Festa Dies (Hail thee festival day) versions (Easter, Whitsunday)

All hail the power of Jesus’ name

Among the worst:

In the garden (He walks with me and He talks with me)

Kumbaya (isn’t really a hymn)

My favourites are Gifts of bread and wine, O come Emmanuel and As the deer longs.

I also like I watch the sunrise and hear I am Lord.

The worst is amazing grace.

“Lord of the Dance” and “Go Make a Difference” are abominations.

Go make a difference is the absolute worst. Or any others that clap

We were forced to sing that often in my high school’s liturgical choir. It was the unofficial school song despite all the students hating it.

It’s an easy song to play or the music leader thought that’s what kids like is why they chose it

Best:

Anything to Beethoven’s 9th / Ode to Joy (it’s my jam)
‘O God Beyond All Praising’
    • Anything with lots of organ, brass & kettle drums
‘Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent’ (a Capella in parts)
      ‘Lord, I Need You’
Worst:

Easter Vigil setting by Rory Cooney.
Bread of Life (same composer)
Wade in the Water (not appropriate for the sprinkling rite)
Eagles Wings aka - YooHoo! song
Most anything that came from the 70’s - Pope BVI liturgical reform.

Has anyone mentioned O Sacred Head Surrounded? That’s a haunting tune.
(So haunting that Paul Simon stole it for his song American Tune.)

“All People That on Earth Do Dwell”
“Jerusalem, My Happy Home”
“Lord of All Hopefullness”

Are among my favorites. There are many many more.

Side note: for those who say Amazing Grace is overdone, I personally haven’t heard that one in years. At mass that is…I hear it all the time on Youtube. Yeah, I’m pretty cool. 😎

My parish has sung “Battle Hymn” on a couple of occasions, the Sunday closest to either Veterans Day, 4th of July or Memorial Day. Love it!
