AFAIK, the study aids from The Jerusalem Bible have not been distributed as an e-Sword resource. (I converted the cross-references to a commentary, for my own use.)

If you want to request permission from Tyndale Press, and the other copyright holders, to distribute The Jerusalem Bible with both text, and study notes, do so. (If you can secure permission to distribute the set, I’ll help you convert everything to e-Sword format.)

I guess I would like for Jonathon to read this. I think he may be the expert of e-sword.
I found e-sword a few weeks ago and Wow :extrahappy:
I am taking the Denver Bible program and this is one outstanding study tool. I think I have all of the bibles that I need but most commentaries are Protestant that I have. Is there anything that would go with my Jerusalem bible maybe ? or something close.
I do have the Illustrated Catholic bible software package but it is not close to the quality of e-sword.
Can I get any Catholic resources for e-sword? I was told that most of the catholic things were in spanish…😦
If anyone can help. please let me know. I did read a post from Jonathon that indicated he knew something about e-sword.

Ignatius Bible - RSV 2nd Ed.-Catholic Edition

or

Navarre Bible though it is in many volumes and very costly if you want all of the books.

a) AFAIK, there are no commentaries that are Catholic in orientation. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the Spanish commentaries was from a Catholic POV.

b) Is that The Jerusalem Bible,or The New Jerusalem Bible? (Neither of them is supposed to be publicly distributed for e-Sword. )

You are going to have to create them. And then get permission to distribute them.

Getting permission to distribute is the sticky part. My understanding is that the higher up in the church hierarchy the person making the request is, the easier it is for permission to be granted.

I’d suggest working with both your local Bishop, and the Denver Bible program people, when requesting permission to distribute the related e-Sword resources.
The Study Note component in e-Sword does not work with deuterocanonical material. This may be fixed in a future release of e-Sword.

There are issues in creating commentaries for GreekEsther and GreekDaniel in e-Sword. The creator of e-Sword is aware of the specific issues. Fixing those issues breaks the “traditional” order of those books. This is not something he is inclined to do.

the best bible to use is the one you will use.
as long as it is an approved Catholic translation, with imprimatur and all the books, use the version that you find easiest to read and most attractive to use.

if you are using it in a formal class or bible study, RCIA, Confirmation class, use the version they prescribe.

In this order:
  1. Douay Rheims. Dignified, traditional language, reliable translations in key passages, and reliable commentary notes, reflecting orthodox Catholic teaching.
  2. Confraternity-Douay Bible - The New Testament, which is a revision of the Rheims NT, and much easier to read, is still easily available, complete Bible available from the Philippines (www.sinagtala.com)). The old Testament later became the basis for the New American Bible Old Testament.
  3. Ronald Knox translation of the Holy Bible- only New Testament is currently available from Temple Gate Publishers, but Baronius Press is going to publish the entire Bible soon. Knox’s notes thoroughly reflect Catholic Orthodoxy, with ample quotes from the fathers. Worth the price of the book.
  4. RSV 2nd Catholic Edition 2006. To be preferred over the 1966 edition, because of corrected translations more in line with Catholic teaching (e.g., Isaiah 7.14; use of “only-begotten Son” rather than “only Son.”).
  5. RSV Catholic Edition 1965-1966
  6. The New Catholic Bible 2007, by the Catholic Truth Society in England. It is simply the 1966 Jerusalem Bible, but with these changes: “Yahweh” is replaced by “LORD” for the Divine Name in the OT; the JB Psalter is replaced by the 1963 Grail Psalter.   7. Jerusalem Bible, 1966 edition. lovely, literary translations.
 
It is the New and yes it is copyrighted. I did get it off a esnip site so I do not know. ???

buy a parallel bible or comparative NT. then you can see which version you’d prefer-it’s the best of all worlds

a) esnips won’t accept a notice of actual or potential copyright violation from a third party;

b) Neither Quickverse, nor any other Bible Software company can issue a DMCA take down notice, even though it infringes upon their work, because they do not hold the copyright to the text;

c) The publisher, for reasons best known to themselves, is unwilling to admit that the e-Sword resource exists. Adding insult to injury, other publishers don’t want to put material in e-Sword format, because of the number of resources that are copyright violations that are being distributed.

This leaves users in an awkward place. They want to do the right thing, and pay royalties, etc, but the publisher won’t release the material in e-Sword format, nor make any attempts to prevent their material from being distributed in e-Sword format.
Now wondering what the reaction of a Priest would be, to hear somebody say "Father forgive me, for I illegally distributed 25 copies of the " during confession.

Baronius press claim on their site that they are preparing to print the douay rheims, vulgate parallell bible.

I hope you are joking. :eek: It has got to be one of the worst ones. As someone who serves as a reader, the translation that the USCCB has (it’s their own NAB and RNAB version) makes for very poor proclamation. The epistles are translated to appear as though they have run-on sentences. Of course, the sentences do go on for several lines. I have had to get my trusty RSV-CE 2nd edition so as to figure out when to make the appropriate breaks for these compound sentences.

The best translation actually is the Douay-Rheims. My grandmother left me hers. Inasmuch as she was not a well-educated woman, she read her Bible on a daily basis. I know because it is dog-eared and has many slips of paper within the pages where she read the daily Mass readings in her Bible. My other favorite is the Ignatius RSV-CE. The fact that it uses Liturgicam Authenticam as the basis for its translation (a mandate from the Holy See on liturgical translations) makes it very sound. Plus, you don’t have the idiosyncracies of inclusive language that tend to cloud things.

Interestingly enough, when the Office of Liturgies for the Supreme Pontiff inserts the English readings into the orders of worship for the Papal Masses, the translation does not come from the USCCB lectionary. I don’t quite know where it comes from, but, it is of a much higher caliber than what our US lecitonary has.
