I am aware that there are several books about investigators who have taken it upon themselves to research the historical evidence for the resurrection. Many of them have been mentioned and recommended here.

My issue is that I am not a speed reader and my “to-read” list is already quite huge. As such, I would really appreciate your assistance in narrowing down the list.

Of the books that you have read, which one would you say is the singularly best book on the subject?
If it matters, understand that I will be aproaching the book with extreme skepticism (not because I don’t believe, but because that’s how I approach everything I read), so I would prefer one that is written in expectation of being questioned.

I thank you in advance for any help you can give.

This is the best one I’ve read.

Thank you very much.
The praise and reviews look like this is exactly what I was looking for.
Thank you again.

Though I have not yet read it, N.T. Wright’s “The Resurrection of the Son of God” is supposed to be a huge deal. Based on what I’ve read about the book, I’d recommend it.

God bless,

LJH,

There have been some excellent works on the Resurrection produced in the last ten years. These works have taken the argument to the next level, in my opinion.
  1. The Resurrection of the Son of God by N.T. Wright (2003)
  2. *The Case for the Ressurection of Jesus *by Gary Habermas and Mike Licona
  3. The Resurrection of Jesus: A New Historigraphical Approach by Mike Licona
In addition, philosophers Tim and Lydia Mcgrew produced an excellent work on the resurrection as a chapter to a book titled The Blackwell Companion to Natural Theology. You can access it for free here: lydiamcgrew.com/Resurrectionarticlesinglefile.pdf

LJH,

If you are just starting out on this particular topic, I would recommend starting with The Case for the Resurrection of Jesus by Habermas and Licona. The other books that have been mentioned here are very technical and are best read after having read the one by Habermas. Wright’s book, in particular, is very dry at first as it is a word study on the two words used for resurrection in Greek. He covers all of the instances where these two words are used from approximatly 200 B.C. through 200 A.D., if I remember correctly. It’s been awhile since I’ve looked at it. He doesn’t actually get into the actual argument for the Resurrection until around page 500.

Licona’s work is also very technical but he takes the argument in a different direction. By the way, none of these authors would be comfortable using the word “proof” for the Resurrection of Jesus. Rather, they are arguing that Jesus’ Resurrection is the best explanation of the available data. Far better than it’s competitors (e.g., hallucination theory, myth, fraud. etc.).
