Hey all,

I haven’t posted in years. The reason I logged back in is that I am looking for a gift for my oldest sister for Christmas. She recently told me that she’d love to find a nice book on the saints. I’d like to get her something that reads almost like a coffee table book, you know, lots of beautiful pictures/art/paintings/etc, with interesting stories of the saints.

There is so much out there to choose from. I myself bought a book on the saints awhile back, called Mysteries, Marvels, Miracle In the Lives of the Saints, by Joan Carroll Cruz. It’s an okay book, but no artwork, strictly text. It has alot of interesting info, but to be honest it gets very repetitive. I never finished it.

So does anyone know of any really rich, visually compelling books on the saints? I’d appreciate the help. I figured this would be the place to come and ask.

Amazon has several versions of Butler’s Lives of the Saints. I used to read this book when I was younger, and the saints for each day are very inspirational. There are several price ranges which should be affordable for this gift.

This is rich in artwork, with brief paragraphs about the saints. If art is what you are looking for, I would recommend this.

Butler’s Lives is a classic from 200 years ago. It has been updated several times. The original, 12 volumes, has biographies and daily reflections.
The most important update was Donald Attwater’s 4 vol. update of Herbert Thurston’s version. No artworks, but excellent information on saints. No pious reflections. From the 1950s.
Single volume updates of Butler’s are available, many excellent but rarely with artwork.

Thanks all! Much appreciated.

I have a smaller book as well, entitled The Little Book of Saints by Priya Hemenway.
Is it similar to this, or nicer, I wonder?
