So we aren’t allowed to use any other methods? We aren’t allowed to recommend the works of great Christians?
What other methods are there??? If they were truly “great Christians”, then they’d know that it is the preaching of the Gospel that saves, and the Gospel alone.
I don’t recall ever reading in the Bible that the Bible is the only book you are allowed to read and recommend to other people, nor do I recall it saying that wisdom (which does not contradict scripture) cannot be found in other places
Nor do I. What does that have to do with the topic at hand?
Stop hijacking my threads.
How did I hijack your thread?

Absolutely nothing. The topic at hand is what books people know of that they have seen to be effective in bringing people towards God. Your 2 cents is the gospel. Thank you.

Anybody have any others? I just got some Chesterton books out from the library; what are your favorite works of his?**

I know this may seem a little fishy here at Catholic Answers, but Karl Keating’s Catholicism and Fundamentalism was instrumental in my conversion. The chapters stand alone, so one can read about whatever is catching one’s attention at the moment. Just fabulous stuff.

One thing we need to remember is that the Gospel was handed down two different ways. By word of mouth (Sacred Scripture) and in written form (Sacred Tradition). BOTH methods are exceptable forms of evangelization…

I only hve one of his works, “Orthodoxy” and enjoyed it immensely, although I must admit to having some difficulty reading him. I found that if I could read it, “Out loud” it seemed to work better. I do enjoy the Chesterton program they run on EWTN - Great Stuff.

Something else to consider giving people, especially as busy as we are sometimes is CD’s. I’ve gotten several of the rack at Church from Lighthouse Cathlic Media. Steven Ray, and Tim Staples are both godd ones for conversion stories.

Fiction is often a good introit into more serious theological reading so here are some tips.

How about Pierced by a Sword by Bud MacFarlane? Can’t say I like his other two novels but that one is pretty good. Best thing is the price: this Catholic apostolate makes these books available for free.

Not a terrific piece of prose but for another suggestion: “A Philadelphia Catholic in King James Court” by Martin Deporres Kennedy.

Slightly better quality writing, especially for someone who likes history might be Glastonbury Tor by LeAnne Hardy, and ***The Time Before You Die ***by Lucy Beckett. Both cover approximately the same time period and touch on some of the same themes.

A classic of sorts would be Sun Slower, Sun Faster by Meriol Trevor. Originally a children’s novel, this book is very complex and rather mature and very fun for all ages.
