Hello,

I am a recent convert. I got confirmed back in September 2019. The one thing that I miss is a good Bible. When it comes to Catholic Bibles, the quality is quite lacking. Does anybody know of any Catholic Bible publisher that makes quality Bibles such as Zondervan does for Protestant Bibles? I want to buy a nice Douay Rheims Bible but I haven’t found one that will stand the test of time and plenty of use. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Try St. Benedict’s Press and Baronius Press. I’ve been pleased with their products.

Baronius Press has always been good. I bought a compact Bible from them but the print was too small. That also seems to be an issue with many Catholic Bibles. I can’t read 8 pt font for a long stretch of time. 12-14 seems perfect.

Ignatius Press is a good publisher. Baronius prints really fine traditional content. However, I’m not too impressed with physical production quality itself.

I would probably agree with this. It’s formatted nicely and ascetically pleasing, but I get the impression that it will wear out quickly. It just seems a bit delicate.

I have a St. Benedict Press NABRE and I think the construction quality is quite good. It’s also pleasing to read.

I generally avoid Catholic Book Publishers if I can. It seems like they haven’t updated their content in 40 years. Their fonts and typesets drive me crazy. I’m stuck with their version of the breviary because it’s the only one we’ve got over here in the ‘ole US of A. I hope that another publisher gets the rights to publish the breviary when we get the new edition.

Is this the old breviary? If so, it sure is cheaper than the 3vol Baronius version.

In case this is of any interest to you…
Interesting. Never seen this before. And I’ve never heard of that publisher. I don’t think it’s the complete old breviary though.

In my case, I was talking about the current (OF) breviary published by Catholic Book Publishers.

There are no premium Catholic Bibles, as far as I’m aware. I would consider the absolute minimum for a premium Bible to be a sewn binding and a genuine (not bonded) leather cover. I’m not aware of any Catholic Bibles currently in print that meet even that low standard.

St. Benedict Press has nothing but glued bindings on its ““premium”” Bibles, as far as I know. Baronius Press has sewn bindings, and used to have French Morocco leather once upon a time, but now it’s nothing but bonded leather over cardboard.

Whenever someone brings up the absolute lack of premium Catholic Bibles, there’s always someone on hand to make excuses for the publishers, usually along the lines of “Catholics don’t buy premium Bibles, it’s not economically feasible to make one.” But it’s hard to see how wee can know that it’s not economically feasible when so few Catholic publishers have even bothered to try.
