Alright y’all, I need some good spiritual reading to get me though this Lenten season! What are the BEST Catholic books out there? Bonus points if it is written by a saint! 😉😁:pray:t2:

The Love of Eternal Wisdom by St. Louis De Montfort would be a good one to contemplatively read during Lent, with an emphasis on especially-careful reading of chapters thirteen and fourteen.

Thomas a Kempis - The Imitation of Christ

Saint John of the Cross - Dark Night of the Soul

Saint Teresa of Avila - The Interior Castle

If you’re open to lesser-known works, I thought Poverty A Sign For Our Times was great. Written by Venerable Aloysius Schwartz. It reflects on the call to a poor man’s lifestyle. The author did wonderful things for orphans, the poor and the disabled in post-war Korea.

Bread and Stone by Ronald Knox
No Man is an Island by Thomas Merton
Duty of Delight - Dorothy Day
Vibrant Paradoxes - Robert Barron
The Screwtape Letters - CS Lewis

And for the bonus point:

A Prophetic Bishop Speaks to his people - Oscar Romero

The novel that the popes have encouraged every one to read “Lord of the World”

After having gone through other books - I too heartedly suggest the Bible, by God…

It’s the most unique book … . And allow God to be your actual Guide…

2nd book? Imitation of Christ …

Well, this is not a book on Theology, but it is very Catholic; the

Deliverance of Sister Cecilia

. The short version is it is a first-hand account about the transformation of a Catholic society (Slovakia) under Communism and how little by little the forces pressured the church (both clergy and laity) into making concessions…first small, then great. Until finally, the entire church structure was dismantled and had to go underground. Since I was born long after the events in question (50’s and 60’s) it was a HUGE eye opener, in that what was true then is true now; we saw the same thing happening during the Obama administration while many supposedly “nice” or “good” people simply let the government take on the church (remember the little sisters of the poor?)

Long book: Summa Theologica
Short book: Chesterton’s life of Thomas Aquinas

For a Catholic novel, the best I’ve ever read…The mass of Brother Michel by Michael Kent. Its awesome. The way love is expressed in both romantic terms and the love of God seen through that as well as in priestly terms is simply amazing. Also the conversations the character has in his defence from his fellow Brothers (to a donkey) is simply humbling. Do yourself a favour and read it over and over. I haven’t even finished it yet and can’t wait to but am also not wanting too.

I like Plain and Parochial Sermons by John Henry Newman. They were written while he was still an Anglican Priest, but they are entirely Catholic in content. Excellent spirituality.

The Cathechism
The City of God
Jesus of Nazareth (3 volumes) by Pope Benedict XVI

It’s a really good book, but I would not consider it spiritual. OTOH, It certainly makes you think.

Christ is Passing By - St. Josemaria Escrivia
