No better movie than boys town. But it’s from 38. Still best catholic movie out there

Sure. It can be from earlier times. It is just hard for some of us to imagine that movies existed before 1950.

😮

I need to see that one.

I always liked The Keys of the Kingdom from 1944 with Gregory Peck. He played a priest again in The Scarlet and the Black in 1983, which was also good.

Speaking of movie priests, Bing Crosby in Going My Way and The Bells of St. Mary’s is a favorite. L.A. movie trivia: St. Monica’s Catholic Church in Santa Monica was used for St. Dominic’s parish in both movies, and Barry Fitzgerald’s character, gruff old Fr. Fitzgibbon, was based on St. Monica’s real-life old pastor, Msgr. Nicholas Conneally.

Also, later than your time frame and probably not what you’re looking for, but I liked it…Jesus of Montreal

My favorite subject…The best religious movie I ever saw was JESUS OF NAZARETH. The actor Robert Powell who portrayed Jesus was great. Also there is a movie called ON BORROWED TIME with Lionel Barrymore, where he has Death {Sir Cedric Harwic] caught up a tree. Bobs Watson the kid from BOY’s TOWN is in it. They do not make movies like this anymore, I enjoy the old movies from the 30’s and 40’s JESUS OF NAZARETH was made in the 70’s they use to show it around Easter,

Since you said “Christian”, I’d throw in the TV movie of “I Heard the Owl Call My Name” with Tom Courtenay in the lead role as a terminally ill Anglican priest assigned to a First Nations community. It’s very 70s but was a favorite of my dad.

Thought of another great movie. A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS about the life of St. Thomas More… Paul Scofield portrays him…

What do you guys think is the best movie ever made on Saint Francis of Assisi ?

The Cardinal has always been one of my favorites. It has a rare scene of dealing with abortion. Something rarely done in film.

Hands down the best movie on St. Francis of Assisi is the one with Bradford Dillman and Stuart Whitman…I had seen another one from the 30’s but not as good as this one.

Oh, I see that it has Dolores Heart, too. She is one of my favorites. Great story about her own vocation from movie star to cloistered Benedictine. (I wish all the world movies were on my Amazon video downloads. )

That’s the movie where she played St. Clare. During filming, she was introduced to the Pope. She said, “I’m Dolores Hart, I play Clare.” And he said, “No, you ARE Clare.” And that pushed her towards becoming a nun.

Thanks, Anna and tawny, I just watched it on youtube. Great movie! It didn’t quite break even at the box office, but spiritually, t’s return on investment has been immeasurable, I’m sure!

And what about movies concerning the Early Christians and Old Testament settings?

Oh, like The Robe and its sequel, Demetrius and the Gladiators? And Quo Vadis? And Barabbas? And Samson and Delilah?

Those are earlier ones, but one of the first things I ever saw Martin Sheen in was from I believe the 1970s, and it was called I believe the Fourth Wise Man.

Also there was Paul Newman’s first movie The Silver Chalice (the book was better though).

Has anyone here seen ‘Jesus of Nazareth’? It covers the birth of Jesus through the Crucifixion and Resurrection. It is a great movie with an all star cast.
