I live in Australia so I don’t get a Catholic TV channel so I’ve bought a few DVDs from a Catholic bookstore. I quite enjoy watching films on the lives of saints or on Jesus but I’m looking for more and was wondering what are some good films people would recommend?
Thanks

Go to www.ewtn.com and they have a wonderful library of films and documentaries. And it is very trustworthy for Catholics. Also on their Catholic Cable Channel they will soon show one of St. Peter. They show good films and documentaries on their Cable network quite often.God Bless, Memaw

These two are on Mr. Esolen’s list, but I’d like to second them:
The Passion of the Christ
A Man for All Seasons

I’m not sure I’d have put Twelve Angry Men on a list of Catholic films as Mr. Esolen did (although his list was really “movies that somehow reflect a Catholic view of the world and man’s place in it”), but it’s one of my favorite movies.

This one wasn’t on the list and I’d like to add it:
Into Great Silence

It’s absolutely crucial for this movie that you do not try to watch it while you are paying the bills, cooking dinner, etc. Set the time aside, darken the room, pour yourself a glass of water, and just watch it. (Actually, this goes for The Passion of the Christ as well. And have tissues handy. Lots. Or possibly skip the tissues and have a towel. It’s a wrenching movie.)

Also, The Journey Home is a great show on EWTN, and you can find episodes of this and a lot of other EWTN shows for free on iTunes. (At least, you can in the US, and it’s worth checking out whether you can in Australia as well.)

In addition to EWTN, look at Ignatius Press. They may not be the best place to order from (seeing as how you’re in Australia), but their video offerings are all pretty good. So you can at least browse through their selection and see what you would like even if you have to order from somewhere else.

The 1963 film, ‘The Cardinal’ is one of my favorites! I also recommend ‘Paul VI: The Pope in the Tempest’. It’s an Italian production, so it’s subtitled, but it’s still a great film.

Since you’re in Australia, you’ll have no problem getting a film I hope will one day be available in the U.S. – ‘The Good Pope: Pope John XIII’, starring Bob Hoskins.

Oh, and ‘The Staircase’ is also another great film! It’s based on a true story.
