Peace be with you all,

Can anyone suggest “good” “orthodox” Catholic Magazines and/or Newpapers that I might subscribe to.

Thank you.

Peace, Love and Blessings,

The best newspaper I have seen is National Catholic Register. It is honest, even-handed, true to the Magisterium, doesn’t have an axe to grind.

Personally, I would not wrap a dead fish in either the National Catholic Reporter or the Wanderer. The Reporter plays cafeteria Catholicism, and the Wanderer is polemical, angry, muck-raking without viable solutions, appears to think I am either ignorant or stupid, and seems to consider anyone to their left a liberal. Both papers are biased; one to the Left and one to the Right. I prefer one that is simpply true to the Magisterium and positive.

New Oxford Review is pretty orthodox.

Commonweal is not.
I agree about Commonweal. I received a sample issue and was horrified by the unsupported blanket and frankly untrue statements in one of the articles. It was an area where I have professional expertise so I knew the writer was either purposely misleading or ignorant of the law. I found the magazine very leftist and not very appealing.

Ditto the National Catholic Register. Great Paper. The very best.

If you are raising children, I get a lot out of Faith and Family but it does not cover issues per se but centers on celebrating the Faith in the home seasonally.

If you want a wide variety of topics, in depth discussion, and something that will stretch your bra(name removed by moderator)ower,

you might take a look at first things. (www.firstthings.com)

Fr Neuhaus works with Evangelicals and gets submissions from Jews.

Some of my favorite articles include topics like

Women Priests -pro/con, written by two Lutheran women pastors, one who converted to Catholicism

Surgical Sex, sex change from the view of a surgeon at JohnsHopkins. Why it doesn’t work and why they don’t do it anymore.

Conciliating Hatred, How the supreme court is making it’s rulings

Authors include
Raymond J. de Souza
Stephen M. Barr
Avery Cardinal Dulles
George Weigel

There is extensive feedback to the authors and the authors respond to the comments on their articles.

You can see ALL the back issues on line. They go on line one month after publication.

This Rock, put out by Catholic Answers is THEEEE Best–I have learned so much about my faith in the 4 years I have subscribed.

If you would like something that publishes editorials, columns, essays, poetry, reviews of books, movies, plays, the media, a selection of funny cartoons, & lots of letters to the editor and has had a broad range of writers including Cardinal Avery Dulles, Cardinal George, Wilfred Sheed, Walter Kerr, Dorothy Day, Sidney Callahan, John Leo, Michael Novak, Fr. John Garvey, Richard Neuhaus, Jacques Maritain, Thomas Merton, George Weigel, Graham Greene, Reinhold Niebuhr, Willa Cather, and Evelyn Waugh, then what you want is COMMONWEAL.

Uh, Evelyn Waugh? He died in 1966. Willa Cather, Reinhold Niebuhr, Thomas Merton, Jacques Maritain, Graham Greene, Dorothy Day, and many other contributors to “Commonweal” are quite indubitably dead–and “Commonweal” has changed a lot in, say, 40 years. In recent decades the magazine has departed from the Catholic orthodoxy it once featured.

I subscribe to a number of Catholic magazines: Catholic World News, Homiletic and Pastoral Review, Crisis (and I agree with Karl Keatings comments regarding Crisis in today’s e-letter, though I do like the magazine), This Rock, and the Catholic Answer. I would describe them all as orthodox. First Things is excellent, and although not specifically Catholic, Catholicism is pretty dominant.

My parents subscribe to the New Oxford Review and have given me back issues. My problem is its tone: almost always angry, and they are as merciless in attacking good Catholics just as much as heterodox Catholics. Every time I think about subscribing, I read some piece that changes my mind. If my only exposure to Catholicism was the New Oxford Review, I would conclude that Catholics are a hostile group, angry at the world and angry with each other.

I have heard good things about the National Catholic Register (not to be confused with the National Catholic Reporter). I don’t subscribe to that newspaper (simply because I’m swamped with reading materials) but I do subscribe to Our Sunday Visitor. I also get a very nice local monthly newspaper called the Catholic Servant—it is excellent, positive, and very orthodox.

I’ll second that! It is my favorite publication of anykind. I am a relatively new subscriber but have spent many hours reading the online back issues.
Confession, I need to have a dictionary handy for many of the articals.:o

Peace,

THE NEW OXFORD REVIEW. NOR was once a part of the Episcopal Church before becoming Catholic in 1983 after watching the Episcopal church be gradually destroyed by radicals and feminists. Consequently, the NOR is very good at spotting the leftward drift toward heterdoxy of its sister publications like Commonweal. One example is in November 2003 issues of NOR which calls to attention a book by Peter Steinfels, a former but recent editor of Commonweal, called A People Adrift: The Crisis of the Roman Catholic Church in America. The NOR summarize Steinfels argument by saying that according Steinfel “if only the Church can get in sync with the feminist sexual revolution thats overtaken western culture everything will work out fine” for the church (New Oxford Review,11/2003, P.4). Thats just one example of the editorial slant these sister publications that the NOR routinely exposes.

Karl Keating:

No, the Karl Keatings of circa 1952 said the same things – that having writres like Evelyn Waugh, Willa Cather, Reinhold Niebuhr, Thomas Merton, Jacques Maritain, Graham Greene, and Dorothy Day was evidence that Commonweal was questionable.

40 years from now we will have a new Karl Keating saying that Commonweal has departed from the good sense they had in 2005.

P.S. You forgot Walter Kerr, a wonderful man also dead at present.

On the other hand Cardinal Avery Dulles, Cardinal George, Wilfred Sheed, John Leo, Michael Novak, Richard Neuhaus, and George Weigel are very much alive. You wanna pick a fight with any of these guys?

I echo what others have said here: *National Catholic Register * (to clarify, REGISTER, not Reporter), This Rock, and First Things. Each is good at its own thing.

*National Catholic Register * is a great weekly paper that covers current events, movie reviews, articles of general interest, and so on. There is something for everyone in this newspaper.

*This Rock * is basically an apologetics magazine – glossy and well edited, great articles of all sort to help you defend your faith.

*First Things * is more intellectual – indepth articles about a variety of ethical/moral issues, not necessarily by Catholic authors.

Would the deceased authors support the magazine today? Anyone can reprint articles or essays from deceased authors. And the living writers mentioned last can be found anywhere and everywhere. Google any of 'em and you’ll come up with a treasure trove of good reading. You chide the previous poster to pick a fight with Novak, Weigel etc. Perhaps instead we should ask them their opinion of the magazine regarding it’s faithfulness to the Magisterium.

The real question is—What is the focus of the newspaper or magazine? The person who started the thread wanted an orthodox newspaper or magazine. Commonweal is most obviously not orthodox. Kinda sneaky for you to present it as such. Makes one question your motives.

I subscribe to the “National Catholic REGISTER” and love it. Very good newspaper.

For one year, I took the “US Catholic” magazine and by the end of the subscription had quit reading it  . Not very orthodox.

Thanks for all the good ideas. Though I did not start this thread, I am also interested in finding good Catholic publications.

Could I expand on this question and ask about Catholic publishers? Any opinions on Tan, Ignatius press, Paulist, Sheed and Ward (probably defunct?)? Any suggestions?

I’ll chime in with another vote for the National Catholic Register. For magazines, one of my favorites is Lay Witness.
