Peace be with you all,

Thanks to everyone who offer this suggestions.

I currently receive “This Rock” and was looking for something that would come out to support or aid those who wish to inrich themselves with an ‘orthodox’ perspective on the issues.

With that said I think I will subscribe to the National Catholic Register but I also recognize that whistle blowers are never liked until it’s too late so perhaps New Oxford Review would be good too.

Peace, Love and Blessings,

Karl Keating:
Uh, Evelyn Waugh? He died in 1966. Willa Cather, Reinhold Niebuhr, Thomas Merton, Jacques Maritain, Graham Greene, Dorothy Day, and many other contributors to “Commonweal” are quite indubitably dead–and “Commonweal” has changed a lot in, say, 40 years. In recent decades the magazine has department from the Catholic orthodoxy it once featured.
I dropped Commonweal about the time that John Cogley switched to the Episcopal Church. At least he was an honest turncoat.

Commonweal is most obviously not orthodox.
I say it is.
Kinda sneaky for you to present it as such. Makes one question your motives.
Kinda fascistic of you to go around throwing accusations of heterodoxy. Makes one question your motives.

Orthodox? Sure it is, sure it is.

And, of course, anyone who disagrees with you is a fascist.:clapping:

feel free to present some evidence. But accusing people of heresy without any evidence as you did does suggest a fascistist approach.

Heresy?

Fascist?

You need to get out more.

Nan,

You wrote: “Could I expand on this question and ask about Catholic publishers? Any opinions on Tan, Ignatius press, Paulist, Sheed and Ward (probably defunct?)? Any suggestions?”

Ignatius Press is very reliably orthodox.

Commonweal is clearly not orthodox. From Reading my New Oxford Review (July-August 2003), the Commonweal sometimes provides a forum for Homosexual Priests to vent against the Church Anonymously (of course). Could a Homosexual Priest write an article admitting to be sexual active in a Catholic Publication? Look no further: see “Made in God’s Image: A Homosexual Priest Speaks Out” (Commonweal, April 11, 2003).

Personally, I don’t find terms “heterodox” or “orthodox” the least bit helpful as descriptions for magazines. More helpful is what are the nature of the articles that you hope to find? What type of topics do you want to see in them?

Are you looking for something primarily apologetic based? If you want to read something that reports Catholic perspectives on world affairs, something like the Rock or Envoy is quite useless, although they are good magazine for learning about Catholic apologetics. Is it just for you, or do you want your family to read it too?

Can anyone suggest “good” “orthodox” Catholic Magazines and/or Newpapers that I might subscribe to.
Annals Australasia, edited by Fr. Paul Stenhouse, M.S.C., Ph.D., has been continuously published for 115 years. One of the former editors was the famous “Radio Replies” priest, Dr. Leslie Rumble, M.S.C.

Affectionally called “Animals” by some, it comes in 10 issues (sometimes two issues may come in a combined issue.)

Sample articles from some of the past twenty years are on-line at Annals Australasia un-Official Home Page

Subscription Rates to “Annals Australasia” and for the two Apogetics volumes, “Catholic Answers to Bible Christians” may be viewed at the above site. Fr. Stenhouse has given me his permission to display his articles - save some which are the subject of current re-sales, such as “Catholic Answers to Bible Christians” and the 13 articles on the paranormal by Dr. leslie Rumble - which ARE available for purchase directly from the publisher.

Interesting. My late father who taught RCIA had in his books i discovered two volumes of “CATHOLIC ANSWERS TO BIBLE CHRISTIANS: A Light on Biblical Fundamentalism” by Chevalier Press (C) 1988. On the acknoowledgment Page, it says most of material already apppeared in Annuals Austrailia from 1986 to 1988. I had always wondered where my Dad had got these and if Annuals Austrailia was still around.

Yes - that is the source. Great reading, great apologetics! I have c. 200 backcopies that I scored from a Catholic library, and there is just not enough time in the day to get portions from them on line.

I enjoy Our Sunday Visitor news paper and find it orthodox most of the time.

My two favorites are Catholic Family News and The Remnant. These two magazins stand up against many of the errors our past Popes have warned us about, including liberalism and modernism. Today more than even, we need to be aware of these error, since they have envaded much of the Church.
