Which secular musicians recorded the best Christmas songs? Here are some of mine:
  • “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”–Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
  • “Do They Know It’s Christmas”-Band Aid
  • any Karen Carpenter Christmas song

OK, how about “Mary, Did you Know” by Clay Aiken. Or if you want a great Christmas song that is not explicitly religious, I like his version of “Don’t save it all”.

Celine Dion- Oh Holy Night

There’s NOTHING like that song, it’s amazing with her singing it!

Oh Holy Night by Michael Crawford

Oh Holy Night by John Berry

Mary Did You Know by Kathy Mattea

O Come All Ye Faithful by Jim Nabors (he sings it first in english then in latin…absolutely beautiful)

Sting’s rendition of Coventary Carol is really haunting.

I’m not a big fan of pop-rock renditions of classics, but some of the fun non-religious Christmas songs can be good, like John Mellencamp’s version of I saw Mommy or Collective Soul’s Blue Christmas.

Ohh come on guys! You all know its “Carol of the Bells” recorded by Trans-Siberian Orchestra. 😃

Scott,

Not to nitpick, but the name of the song by TSO is Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24.

For an instrumental, I’ll I agree with you, but for songs with actual singing I stand by what I originally posted.

P.S. Have you ever seen the PBS concert of TSO? It’s a tradition in our house to watch it every year. Michael Craword and that little girl on Oh Holy Night…absolutely wonderful!!!

O Holy Night by Andy Williams, who sings just as good now, at 78, as he did years ago.

“It Wasn’t His Child” by Trisha Yearwood. Talks St. Joseph, husband of Mary. 🙂

Couldn’t agree more! 👍 (His live version of “Oh, Holy Night” even got a standing ovation from my hubby!)

Peace,
MSGirl ❤️

**NO,No NO!!!Neil Diamond,Hark the Herald Angels sing,Oh, Holy Night!!!😃 **

The Little Drummer Boy - Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, but I haven’t heard it by Perry Como, that I can recall.

Bob Seger makes me cry.

My personal favorite: the Bing Crosy/David Bowie duet of Little Drummer Boy/ Peace On Earth

I can’t believe no one wrote The Christmas Song by Nat King Cole. It’s classic!

I understand that David Bowie wrote the counter-melody right there on the set. It really adds a beautiful touch to a beautiful song!

Oh, Holy Night! by all the singers mentioned above really gives me chills. And thanks for the TSO Christmas Special tip, guys. I’ll make sure to watch it this year.

P.S. Please don’t tell me I already missed it…please?

Notworthy

“It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” by Johnny Mathis.
“All I Want for Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey.

Notworthy,

I checked yahoo tv guide and they don’t show the pbs special being aired, but you can catch TSO on 12/14 on Good Morning America and on 12/15 on Regis and Kelly.

You can hear the whole version of Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24 (Carol of the Bells) here:

What no one has mentioned about TSO’s Christmas Eve and Other Stories is that the whole cd ‘tells a story’. Their music is unbelievable, but to tell a story at the same time is awesome.
