Notworthy,

This is a P.S. to my last post. You can buy the PBS special of TSO here:

amazon.com/gp/product/B00005R1N6/qid=1134477381/sr=11-1/ref=sr_11_1/103-5357867-2345443?n=130

It’s only $9.99.
Thank you! I think I will!

Notworthy,

Our family has been watching the special on PBS for the last few years, but it’s always during their winter pledge drive, so the special has three 15 minute interupptions. They offer the same dvd for a $100.00 pledge. Well, that’s way out of our affordability, which is what prompted me to see if amazon had it. Imagine my surprise when they did and it was only 10 bucks. I ordered mine a few days back and hopefully it will be here today.

I’ve been posting about TSO on a message board I run and have gotten two more fans for them. Maybe I should be on their payroll as a p.r. person;) .

Lapsed:
Sting’s rendition of Coventary Carol is really haunting.
.
I’ll second that, the first time I heard it on the radio I was spellbound.

“Adeste Fidelis” by Andrea Bocelli and “O Holy Night” by Josh Groban. I get goose bumps at both.

This is good:

This is not the song “Grandma” by the St. Winifred’s School Choir which reached no. 1 in the British charts. Any Christmas song called “Grandma” that isn’t that one must be a good thing.

Now this one is fantastically awful:

i-mockery.com/shorts/starwars-xmas/default.php

Yes, it’s the original Star Wars Christmas album. This web page contains some flowery language, but to compensate it contains a link to listen to the album. Aaaaargh.

Of course I could refer you to the superb song by Jason and the Straptones, presented here with guitar chords. I’m sure I didn’t play it in E flat at church last year:

That’s quite enough. I can highly recommend the Star Wars album if you want to have no brain left.

**Blue Christmas by Porky Pig? Oh my! I’ve been waiting to hear this song so I can have a really good laugh, it is the funnest song ever!

“All I Want for Christmas” by Mariah Carey just puts this big grin on my face and I have to sing and dance along (not a pretty sight, but hey, it’s only once a year!)

“O Holy Night” by Josh Groban, and the song he sings from the Polar Express, think it’s “Believe”. He has such a beautiful voice.

Anything by Karen Carpenter, I just purchased the Christmas CD and have it in my car.**

*The First Nightingale’s Song * (I think that’s the title) by Garth Brooks. Makes me cry over and over.
*Christmas Polka * by Jim Reeves. (Don’t make fun of me!) My Nana used to dance it with me in the living room. She died when I was twelve, and I will always remember that. I was a dancer, and I could hardly keep up with her!! 🙂

P.S. That song Mary did you know drives me crazy. I think it is inconsistent with Catholic teaching on Mary and the Immaculate Conception. But that is just my opinion. I keep thinking “of course she knew who he was!” 😉

Lori,

The Garth brooks song is called The Gift. It’s on his Beyond the Season cd.

Thanks. I didn’t know the title because it’s on a cd my mom recorded for me. Is that really what it’s called? Seems like there’s so many songs with that title. Are you talking about the one with the orphan girl Maria and the bird? I just can’t believe that’s the title. They should have thought of something better for that beautiful song. Maybe the Offering would be better. I don’t think the word gift is even in the song. What are these people thinking who name these songs, anyway? 😉

**Garth Brooks - The Gift **

(written by: Stephanie Davis)

From the album “Beyond The Season”

A poor orphan girl named Maria
Was walking to market one day
She stopped for a rest by the roadside
Where a bird with a broken wing lay
A few moments passed till she saw it
For it’s feathers were covered with sand
But soon clean and wrapped it was travelling
In the warmth of Maria’s small hand

She happily gave her last peso
On a cage made of rushes and twine
She fed it loose corn from the market
And watched it grow stronger with time

Now the Christmas Eve service was coming
And the church shone with tinsel and light
And all of the townfolks brought presents
To lay by the manger that night
There were diamonds and incense and perfumes
In packages fit for a king
But for one ragged bird in a small cage
Maria had nothing to bring

She waited till just before midnight
So no one could see her go in
And crying she knelt by the manger
For her gift was unworthy of Him

Then a voice spoke to her through the darkness
Maria, what brings you to me
If the bird in the cage is your offering
Open the door, let me see
Though she trembled, she did as he asked her
And out of the cage the bird flew
Soaring into the rafters
On a wing that had healed good as new

Just then the midnight bells rang out
And the little bird started to sing
A song that no words could recapture
Whose beauty was fit for a king

Now Maria felt blessed just to listen
To that cascade of notes sweet and long
As her offering was lifted to heaven
By the very first nightingale’s song
