Best church in Stockton CA?

I spend a great deal of time in Stockton, CA.

Suffice it to say, I am no big fan of the liturgies i find there.

I would liek to ask those of you who live in/around the area, which church in Stockton is, in your experience, the most traditional and orthodox, liturgically speaking?

You did not find St. Stephen the First Martyr everything you wanted? I’m shocked to say the least!

Yes you will have to drive. No it is not that far, if this is how you’re looking to worship at Mass.

St. Gertrude also has an EF Mass on the first Sunday of the month right there in Sotckton. It’s on Main St., about 15 minutes from UoP.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a car, since all my money goes straight to the finance department at UOP.

I haven’t heard about St. Gertrude… i was pretty sure that most tridentine masses stopped after Bishop Blair took over. I’ll have to look into that… really interesting…

You could go test every one, and perhaps you can get a good NO. I imagine the Mass at the Newman Center is not what it should be?

My DH got his BA from Regents, but he did all but 12 semester hours at UoP.

Yeah, i’ve been tossing around the idea of taking the bus. It wouldn’t be a weekly thing, but I’m thinking for holy days and Holy Week i can probably make it up there for mass.

I am also from the Stockton area and was unaware of the EF being offered at St. Gertrude’s. I remember that it might have been at one time, but when we went to check, it had stopped. But I could be wrong…Do you know for certain it is still offered today?

Along the lines of the OP, I would say that in all my parish hopping aroudn this town, I haven’t found one NO Mass that is consistent. I currently attend St. Bernadette’s, as it is closest, and for the most part there is little tinkering. That being said, I went to St. Stephen’s in Sacramento for years, (was actually married by Rev. John Berg, the current Superior of the FSSP, back when he was the assistant priest and the Fraternity was still at St. Rose and Immaculate Conception parishes), and it was very spriritually fulfilling. Haven’t been to Sacramento for a while (1 to 1.5 years) as budget and wife’s class schedule are currently a strain.

It would be a wodnerful thing to get an FSSP Mass going in Stockton, but I have heard that Bishop Blaire is very much against the old Latin Rite. I was told by the Pastor at St. Bernadette’s that he would allow an EF mass if there was a “ground-swell” (his word) of desire among the laity for one. I didn’t know how to respond at the time (this was right after the Pope issued the clarification on the Motu Propio). Any thought’s suggestions on how to start up some sort of petition for an EF mass on a weekly basis in Stockton?

Some bishops of that sort use the “we don’t have priests who know the EF” excuse, but if there is a priest available who is conversant with the EF, one would think the motu proprio kicks-in. Meaning that it should not have to go to the bishop at all. Even if the priest has faculties in another diocese, a valid celebret should be sufficient. First thing to do might be to have a chat with the FSSP priest. He’s likely aware of the “ins and outs” of such things.

If all else fails, i.e., if the bishop involved has erected roadblocks, you might thing of trying the Ecclesia Dei commission.

As I understand things, I believe they would “encourage” compliance with the motu proprio. But, that’s a later thing. First things first: best bet is to give a ring to the FSSP and see what they have to say. It might all be easier than you think. And if not, they should be able to walk you through the process. More than likely, the FSSP has been down this road before.
